Legislators Hear Professor Hill
KEEPING a stiff upper lip in the midst of Republican odds overwhelmingly against him. Prof. Herbert W. Hill of the Dartmouth history department, who is Democratic state chairman of New Hampshire, was the guest speaker May 7 at a Concord luncheon meeting of the Dartmouth men in the State Legislature. The two Democratic members of the group of 18 Dartmouth legislators were loyally present, but the attendance had a decided Republican tinge. Dartmouth fellowship outweighed party affiliation, however, and a cordial time was had by all.
The eighteen Dartmouth men in the New Hampshire State Legislature, all members of the House, include Speaker J. Walker Wiggin 'go of Manchester, Majority Floor Leader Richard F. Upton '35 of Concord, Coordinating Committee Chairman Blaylock Atherton '23 of Nashua, Education Committee Chairman Ernest L. Silver '99 of Plymouth, and Public Health Committee Chairman Howard P. Sawyer '15 of Brookfield.
Other Dartmouth members of the House are Charles A. Holden '95 of Hanover, Charles A. Tracy '97 of Amherst, Dr. Howard N. Kingsford '98m of Hanover, Guy E. Corey '99 of Portsmouth, Col. Burritt H. Hinman '04 of Stratford, George W. Boynton '06 of Hillsboro, Fred A. Jones '06 of Lebanon (Speaker of the House in 1921), Clinton W. Elwell'11 of Exeter, James F. Malley'11 of Somersworth (Democrat), Calvin Oakes '26 of Claremont, Robert C. Hazelton '27 of Chester, Parker E. Sawyer 'go of Franklin (Democrat), and Perkins Bass '34 of Peterboro.
James C. Bingham '18 of Concord, legislative agent for the Boston and Maine Railroad, originated the idea of the get-together and was in charge of the arrangements. Stanley A. Spiller of New London, who almost matriculated with the class of 1904, attended the luncheon, as did George L. Hurd of the House staff, who is the father of Kenneth B. Hurd '23 and the grandfather of Kenneth B. Hurd Jr. '48.
