Alumni Fund Surpasses Goal
July 1947

As OF JULY 2 the 1947 Alumni Fund had reached a total of $363,000, easily surpassing the scheduled quota of $350,000, and with additional gifts still expected which were mailed from points distant from Hanover before the June 30 deadline expected to swell this figure still further. Due to the fact that these late gifts were not all in, final figures were not available as this issue of the MAGAZINE went to press.

The special stress placed on increased participation this year is likely to have paid off in increased numbers of contributors, according to the best estimates on the basis of incomplete figures given by George H. Colton '35, Executive Secretary of the Fund. Although exact figures were not available there were over 13,000 gifts in hand, indicating that last year's figure will probably be exceeded and pointing to -the possibility of setting a new all-time Dartmouth high in the matter of participation. At this writing the record still stands at 13,509 set in 1944.

Leading the way in this respect were two Group II Green Derby classes, 1914 and 1915, who have been waging a fierce fight for top honors in their race throughout the current drive. Both classes have exceeded the 100% mark in participation this year, becoming the first of the larger classes to turn that trick under the new participation index system started in 1945. No final figures were available as to the respective Green Derby standings this year, but '14 and '15 were in a hot race and 1935 seemed likely to lead all other classes in total number of contributors, with 1941 a probable second.

Seven classes were all above the $10,000 mark in total gifts and were blanketed so closely that any one of the seven might be first in the cash race when the books are closed later this month. The top four are 1915, 1927, 1914 and 1926, with 1918, 1923 and 1917 not far behind.

Despite the indications of another banner year foretold by the above nearfinal figures, there was indicated no possibility of the 1947 drive reaching the amazing dollar heights of the record-breaking 1946 campaign which totalled $417,000. However, the possibility of a new record in participation would add another convincing proof of the loyalty of Dartmouth alumni to their College.
