THE COLLEGE will open its 180 th year Friday, October 1, with an expected enrollment of slightly over 3,000, which is approximately the same as the number enrolled during the fall semester in 1947. As of September 10 there were 734 men on the active freshman list, which would make the Class of 1952 the largest first-year class in Dartmouth's history.
The proportion of World War II veterans in the student body will be smaller than a year ago. Approximately 50 per cent of the upperclassmen will be in that category as compared with 60 per cent in 19.17. Only 71 or approximately nine per cent of the freshmen have served in the armed forces. The new selective service act is not expected to materially affect the 1948-49 enrollment as under the present draft law students are allowed to complete any school year which they have entered.
The number of married students has dropped from the 275 of a year ago to 248. South Fayerweatiier Hall, the last of the dormitories to be used to house married students, has reverted to its former status, leaving Wigwam Circle and Sachem Village as the only housing projects for married students.
