To OPEN ITS 41st publication year, the ALUMNI MAGAZINE returns to the subject of admissions which provided the lead article in the first issue last year. The editors feel that admissions is one point at which more light can profitably be shed, for the benefit of both alumni and the College. We therefore propose to stick with it and to present authoritative and helpful articles from time to time.
This month, starting on Page 13, the MAGAZINE presents Should the Athlete Rate a Preference? Written by Edward T. Chamberlain Jr. '36, who recently became Assistant Director of Athletics after serving for a number of years in the Admissions Office, this lead article discusses the case of the "well-rounded" applicant, particularly of athletic ability, who might be a marginal risk scholastically.
Another main article this month announces the retirement of Halsey C. Edgerton '06 as Treasurer of the College, effective next June 30, and the appointment of John F. Meek Jr. '33 as his successor. It will be found on Page 19. A tribute to Professor David Lambuth, who died in Hanover this summer, has been written by his English Department colleague, Prof. Benfield Pressey, and appears on Page 21.
