The wild, free hunting call of a touchdown-hungry Dartmouth Indian rang repeatedly through Memorial Stadium on this balmy October afternoon, as the Green ran up the highest score amassed against any opponent since 1943 in practically riding an overmatched Colgate team out of the park. Displaying the most explosive offensive seen in these parts for many years, Coach McLaughry's spirited charges smashed to six touchdowns and missed a couple of others by narrow margins, limiting the Red Raiders of the Chenango Valley to two touchdowns and a safety in the process.

Perhaps the most spectacular characteristic of this encounter was the record of the Green on pass defense. In times past, this has not been precisely one of the strong features of Dartmouth teams and many of my readers will remember grimly sweating out more than one encounter with the opposition passing the boys in green dizzy. But this time it was different, and Dartmouth came through with the unprecedented number of six interceptions of errant Colgate tosses, with Colgate unable to complete a single pass during the first half.

The first Green touchdown came toward the close of the first period, with Dartmouth starting from their own 23-yard line with a sustained march, sparked by Clayton-to-Armstrong passes and climaxed by a pitchout to fullback Bill Dey who went around his own right end for the last five yards into pay dirt. Shortly thereafter, Sullivan's fumble was recovered by Colgate deep in Dartmouth territory and converted into a touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter, thereby temporarily knotting the count at seven each.

After the kickoff, the Dartmouth T formation really began to explode, with another Clayton-Armstrong pass making a first down on the opponents' 30. A moment later, Fitkin scored on a pitchout play over his own left end, in precisely the same place and manner as his winning touchdown against Brown last year. The third Green tally featured a brilliant 43 yard end run by Bobby Tyler (following a pass interception by the übiquitous Larry Perry). Tyler was finally run down just short of the goal line, after which Clayton tossed a pass to substitute end Bill Felton for another TD. The final play of the first half was strictly in keeping with the rest of the game. Joe Sullivan intercepted a pass on the Dartmouth to yard line and sprinted 80 yards through the Colgate team, only to be run down a few yards from the end zone as the whistle blew. Although productive of no tangible result, this run was the high point of the day.

Larry Perry opened the third period by intercepting another Colgate pass on their 44 and racing to the 11-yard line before he was brought to earth. Fitkin then catapulted around right end and scored his second touchdown of the day. After the second Colgate score on a perfectly executed pass into the right flat, the Indians took over again and scored twice in a riotous final period. John Clayton returned a punt from mid-field to the Colgate 20 and a moment later tossed to Armstrong in the end zone for a touchdown. The final Green tally was set up by Larry Perry's third interception, this one beginning on the visitors' 41 and ending up on their 25. Sullivan burst through to the goal line on the next play, only to be stopped a few inches short. Then Bobby Tyler made the first touchdown of his varsity career by careening over into the end zone.

You can see by the minimum description of all this derring-do that the Dartmouth spectators, as well as the team, had a thoroughly satisfactory afternoon. The game was in doubt for only a short time and the Green gave the impression of being able to score practically every time they got their hands on the ball. Clayton at quarterback, Sullivan and Tyler alternating at left halfback, and Fitkin and Perry at the other half were as able a group of backs as Dartmouth has fielded in many years. Dale Armstrong continued his superlative efforts at end, alternating between tossing the Colgate runners on their features and catching passes from Johnny Clayton.

GRAB HIM! John dell Isold, Big Green line coach, instinctively tries to help his charges from the sidelines in the exciting 26-21 win over Columbia in Hanover. Head Coach Tuss McLaughry, right, watches tensely and so does Bob Tyler (42), sophomore back. The picture was taken during one of the first-half Columbia marches which the Indian? stopped just short of the goal line.
