About the time that Daniel Webster was descending the Connecticut River Valley, Dartmouth degree in hand, a precocious youth not yet in his teens was on his way up to put himself at the feet of John Wheelock, 2nd President of the College.

This youth of the Class of 1807, George Ticknor by name, captured in water-colors a view of "the principal buildings of Dartmouth University." Today the original of his painting, "humbly inscribed to the Honorable John Wheelock, Esquire, L.L.D., President," is one of the treasures of Baker Library.

Dartmouth Publications now have on hand a limited number of reproductions in color of Ticknor's historic scene as illustrated above. Of particular interest to alumni, this superb reproduction would also be a valued addition to anyone's collection of prints on early America.

In the background is the facade of the original Dartmouth Hall unrelieved by latter-day elms. Foreground figures include a striding eminence of presidential mien thought to be John Wheelock himself. And in the lower panel appears Ticknor's own quaint dedication dated July 1803. Unframed the print measures 15 by 19 inches.
