Best Class Treasurer
July 1948

As the man who has kept 1912 out of the red and very much in the black, Ralph D. Pettingell, treasurer of the Class of 1912 for the past six years, was honored at the annual dinner of class and club officers in Hanover on May 15. The citation which accompanied the award of a Ticknor print of early Dartmouth was as follows:

Public recognition by a crowd of Dartmouth men is overdue for the recipient of this award to a top worker in the great cause of Dartmouth College. He has been a leader in Class of 1912 affairs since graduation, and for the past six years as treasurer. Earlier, from 1930 to 1939, he was 1912's class agent for the Alumni Fund. In the very important project of increasing circulation of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE our honored friend this evening has always sent the MAGAZINE to substantially more than the required quota of 100% of graduates, and the total circulation in his class has gone as high as 143% of the minimum quota. Only one or two classes have ever exceeded his splendid record in MAGAZINE circulation.

Financially, and in all other respects so far as we know, 1912 is in very good condition. The treasurer has always had a surplus in the class treasury and this year the balance in the black is more than $5OO in spite of allocating $l,OOO to the Class Memorial Fund. Payment of dues has averaged nearly 70% of members and the annual rate of $4.50 is a desirably high figure to provide a good operating margin. Furthermore, our prize winner exhibits virtues of promptness and talented attention to his class duties at every point, and we are happy to present Ralph D. Pettingell with the 1948 Dartmouth Class Treasurers Award, a copy of the Ticknor Print.
