THE practitioners of that ungentlemanly gentleman's sport of rugby went to California this spring, beat the Cardinals, lost to the BATS, and had a pretty good time.
Playing in the 32-team Monterey National Tournament, Dartmouth's ruggers bested the Stanford Cardinals, 100, in the first round (Stanford had won the tournament seven times previously), but then ran into the top-seeded Bay Area Touring Side (BATS). With ten minutes left in the first half, the Green pushed the ball across-and took a 4-0 lead. In the second half Dartmouth threatened several times but failed to reach the goal; then with five minutes left the BATS scored, and the conversion put them up, 6-4. A penalty kick made it 9-4, and Dartmouth's hopes for an upset disappeared.
Dartmouth won one more and lost two in the consolation bracket to finish 12th overall, while the BATS went on to take the championship - no other team coming as close as the Green.
The pretty good time? That matter was taken care of by the Dartmouth Club of San Francisco and Bob Woodberry '54.
