July 1948

As is the custom, the July issue is devoted almost entirely to reports on Commencement and Class Reunions. In his Commencement Address, President Frank P. Graham of the University of North Carolina, honorary degree recipient and one of the nation s leading liberals, discusses the position of the United States as a world leader and urges greater moral power through democracy at home (Page 13). President Dickey in his Valedictory to the graduating class gives seniors three tests to measure their capacity for growth (Page 11). Francis R. Drury '48 in his Valedictory to the College pledges his classmates to uphold the thesis of democracy. (Page 11).

Something of a precedent is set by the publishing of an unusually fine Class Poem, "Not Now At Noon," by Robert C. MacLeod '46, one of the most talented student writers at Dartmouth in recent years (Page 12).

The Cover

The atmosphere of a Commencement held in a light rain is captured by the cover photograph of the faculty procession taken by Adrian Bouchard, our staff photographer. Holding the umbrella is Professor Ernest R. Gieene! while on the left are Professor Merle C. Cowden and Librarian Nathaniel L. Goodrich.

The official class photographs accompany- ing the reunion reports were taken by David Pierce of Hanover.
