IN OPENING its 42nd year of publication the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE presents a new and more informal treatment of College news in a department headed The College. Some editorial comment will appear there, and the formal editorial page has been dropped in favor of an occasional editorial when a subject of special importance warrants it.
One of the large problems faced by Dartmouth, partly as a result of the rising cost of a college education, is the need of increased scholarship funds if the economic diversity of the student body is to be maintained. An article by Robert L. Allen '45, beginning on Page 21, describes the present financial aid program and tells something of the College's plans for meeting this challenge.
Remember John Spagett? by Helen M. Baker, wife of Everett M. Baker '24, will recall for Dartmouth men of the '20's a colorful campus figure who sold them plaster of Paris statues. It will be found on Page 27.
In an exchange of correspondence with the New Hampshire State Commissioner of Education in August, President Dickey made a long statement concerning the Cirrotta tragedy. The correspondence is printed in full in this issue, beginning on Page 24.

The Cover Through the legs of Paul Staley, regular center, may be seen halfback Hal Fitkin and fullback Bill Dey, ready to kick that important point after touchdown—an assignment we hope he will frequently get this fall. Adrian Bouchard created the idea and took the picture.
