On October 29 Eugene D. Burbank wrote the Secretary from Sierre Madre, Calif, in his home across the street from Mount Wilson writing, "The Dartmouth-Yale game will be starting in a few minutes." The Secretary had not heard from Burbank directly for over a year and in this letter he learned Mrs. Burbank a year ago had fallen and broken her right wrist and last March had a severe back injury in an automobile accident. Burbank had overworked, as it was impossible to get enough help, resulting in a coronary thrombosis. But apparently there was an improvement in the situation as the Burbanks now have a most competent housekeeper. He wrote interestingly of the 12 year old dog, John Quincy Adams, and the birthday affair for the dog with the birthday cake and 12 candles. It is fine to know they can play bridge three evenings a week. An enjoyable letter, making one wish he might drop in on the Burbanks and enjoy their hospitality.
The State Commissioner of Mental Hygiene of New York announces the publication of a special annual report commemorating the 40th anniversary of the founding of Letchworth Village School for Mental Defectives at Thiells. The report is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Charles Sherman(Squash) Little of Dartmouth College football fame, first superintendent of the Village, and to Dr. Harry C. Storrs, present senior director.
Recently Edward W. Tewksbury sent the Secretary a pamphlet entitled, Fiftieth Anniversary of the University Club of Randolph,Vermont. This is a "blow by blow" account of a remarkable Club founded in 18.99, of which Ned was one of the founders and of which, commencing in 1914, he was for 30 years Secretary and Treasurer, and in one place regarded as the Czar of this Institution. Beautifully gotten up with photographs of each of the members and with a short sketch of each. The Secretary quotes in full the following:
"EDWARD W. TEWKSBURY, 80, Dartmouth, 1891. Randolph merchant 21 years; life insurance 20 years; treasurer Randolph Congregational church 52 years; auditor village and town 16 years; trustee Kimball Public Library 30 years; director and treasurer South View Cemetery Association 22 years; represented Randolph in Vermont House, 1927-28; secretary University Club 30 years. Married Amy Dodge, 1904. University Club, 1899-."
An interesting sketch of a man, useful in his State, Community and Church, and one that makes the reader aware of the worthwhile character of Ned.
On October 17 William E. Stanley, our faithful Class Agent, passed away in New London, N. H., following an illness of about a week. There will be a sketch of Stanley in "In Memoriam".
This passing away of Stanley leaves us with 13 surviving members plus our honorary member, Miss Ford, who, with her Staff in the Alumni Records Office, recently staged a sort of housewarming party in the new Crosby office spaces.
