ON HIS OWN 140-acre estate, "Stonegate fate Farm," Louis E. Leverone '04 of Chicago, president of the Automatic Canteen Company, has not only made room for twelve new homes but he also has sold them below cost. It's part of his contribution toward solving the housing problem.
There's nothing that Mr. Leverone, one-time president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association in Chicago, would rather do than make people forget their troubles and look for concrete answers to their problems. This time, he's helped a group of young college graduates find a decent place to live among congenial folk. On the banks of the Des Plaines River in Illinois, his farm-estate has ten acres of river frontage which is the site of his housing project. On May 1, the first of the 12 homes was trucked in from the Lustron corporation's Columbus, Ohio, factory and was ready for its lucky owner on June 15. The building time was greatly reduced for the homes that followed.
Another milestone in Mr. Leverone's career of service is the vocational counseling bureau he developed for all fraternity men of Phi Gamma Delta, of which he was national president from 1943 to 1946. He started by fitting some of the Phi Gams who sought employment into his own company. It
consumed many hours of his busy life to talk to each man and set up a card index file, but such is the meat of his diet. As a member of the Dartmouth Alumni Council in 1935, Mr. Leverone was instrumental in starting the present College placement bureau.
Of equal weight are the business career he has carved out for himself and the civic projects he helps direct in Chicago. In addition to Automatic Canteen Company, he heads Nationwide Food Service, Inc. Citizen Leverone is a member of the Chicago and Illinois State Associations of Commerce and is on the Board of Governors of the National Air Council. He has been President, Chairman of the Board, and Chairman of the Aviation Committee of the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce.
How does he do it all in one lifetime? By never neglecting the precious nature of each minute and covering ground by air. One of America's most enthusiastic air travellers and member of the "Million Mile Club," Mr. Leverone has flown to most of the countries of the globe. In July of 1948 he was elected President of the National Aeronautical Association. He is an honorary member of the Royal Aero Club of England, Aero-Club de France, Aero-Club Royal de Belgique, and the Aero Club D'ltalia.
