Nelson A. Rockefeller '30 was appointed on August 16 by President Roosevelt to the newly created position of co-ordinator of commercial and cultural relations among the American republics for the Council of National Defense. In addition, he will act as chairman of the inter-departmental committee on inter- American affairs. His office will cooperate with the State Department's Division of Cultural Relations and his activities will extend into educational and scientific fields.
Nelson Rockefeller has long been interested in South America and has studied both its customs and the Spanish language. At the invitation of the Venezuelan government, he recently organized a company of which Robert R. Bottome 'go is president to aid in developing new industries. One of its first ventures was the building of a hotel at the capital, Caracas. Other Americans below the equator are said to have bid for his services as well.
According to Stephen Early, press secretary to the President, Rockefel- ler will resign as director and officer of all enterprises with which he has been associated in South America. He has also taken a leave of absence from Rockefeller Centre, Inc., of which he is president, in order to devote his whole time to the business of being a "$1 a year man" for his country.
