This Month
February, 1950
ABRAHAM LINCOLN, whose birthday is celebrated this month, had no known relationship with Dartmouth, but Edward C. Lathem '51 makes a strong case for a direct link between Dartmouth's most famous graduate and Lincoln's most famous phrase, "of the people, by the people, and for the people." In his article, beginning on Page 15, Mr. Lathem shows that these immortal words from the Gettysburg Address probably had their original basis in Daniel Webster's historic reply to Hayne.
Thirty-five years ago this month the first intercollegiate ski meet in North America was held between Dartmouth and McGill in Canada. The story of that athletic milestone and the reminiscences of some of the skiers who helped create it are told by Elmer G. Stevens '43, assistant editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, in his article on Page 19.
A Dartmouth milestone of another sort and of the present day was made recently when the Class Memorial Funds passed the halfmillion-dollar mark. For an account of this tremendously important asset to the College, see Page 17.

The Cover Our staff photographer, Adrian Bouchard, was present when the D.O.C. marked its 40th anniversary with a dinner party at the Ravine Lodge. A student group around the fireplace on that occasion produced this month's striking cover picture.
