The 86th Annual Dinner of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Boston was held on Wednesday evening, March 1, at the Copley Plaza. Doane Arnold '27 presided. Almost 600 alumni were in attendance. The Alumni Glee Club and the Glee Club octet from Hanover as well as the Alumni Band under the direction of Bill Perry '22 provided music during the evening.

Speakers of the evening were Paul R. Staley '51, football captain; Tuss McLaughry, football coach; and President John Sloan Dickey. President Dickey, the chief speaker of the evening, while recognizing communism as "a challenge," asserted colleges must be permitted uncurtailed intellectual freedom and not be permitted to become mere "schools of indoctrination." He said Dartmouth had been under no specific pressure to curtail its curricular or the activities of its professors, but "in the academic world generally, a mighty gale is blowing against the concept of intellectual freedom."

"No mind can be free which has not been nurtured in intellectual freedom," he said. "Maintenance of intellectual freedom is the hardest daily business of a college today."

The only way for the world to "get out of this mess we're in," he said, "is to have men who really believe in freedom. But one can't believe in freedom unless he's been exposed to intellectual freedom."

Newly elected officers of the Association are: President, F. William Andres '29; Vice Presidents, H. Clifford Bean 16, Roscoe O. Elliott '20, Robert M. Edgar '28; Secretary, Howard A. Stockwell Jr. '40; Treasurer, GeorgeA. Clark '42; Chorister, Harry S. UcDevitt '07; Executive Committee, Gordon Wentiuorth '40, Richard D. Hill '41, Addison L. Winship '42, Stanton B. Priddy '43, Daniel J. Donahue '44, Charles Holt '45, Robert A. Grady '46, Robert T. Harvey '47, Richard D. Leggett '48, Bobb M. Slattery '49; Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Doane Arnold '27.

Over 1000 people heard the Dartmouth Glee Club open their spring tour at Jordan Hall, Boston, on Saturday, March 25. The full two-hour show was a great success, with the "Injunaires" octet in the starring role. Proceeds of the concert were turned over to the Dartmouth Development Council to be added to the endowment for scholarships. All the Dartmouth Clubs of Greater Boston cooperated in promoting the concert.
