A Guggenheim Fellowship to be devoted to furthering the study of London dramatic performances during the 18th Century has been awarded to G. Winchester Stone Jr. '30, for the year 1950-51. At present Professor of English at George Washington University, he is especially interested in doing research on the plays produced in London between 1740 and 1776, as the information they reveal in the fields of religion, social and scientific theory, and artistic tastes are of broad value. Since the stage reflected all the trends of the times, Professor Stone's book, which he hopes to publish on the basis of his year's study, will meet a need among scholars who are interested in these various aspects of the period.
Much of the material for the studywill be obtained from England by microfilm, but most will be available inthis country, in the Folger, Harvard,Yale or Huntington Libraries. There isat present only one comprehensivesource book on English plays of the 18thCentury—John Genest's Some Accountof the English Stage—and that was published in 1832.
