AN ADDITIONAL GIKT of rare books from Mr. Perc S. Brown of Newark, N. J., has increased to 535 the number of volumes in the collection he has presented to Baker Library in memory of his wife, Marie Beach Brown, mother of Bruce L. Brown '41 and Gordon S. Brown '42.

This second generous contribution to the treasures of Baker was made through the Friends of the Dartmouth Library and was announced at the April 6 meeting of the Friends' executive committee in New York. At that gathering, Richard H. Mandel '26 of Mt. Kisco, N. Y., was elected chairman for the next three years, succeeding George Matthew Adams, whose gifts to the, Dartmouth library over the years have, been numerous and valuable. John C. Sterling 'i > of New York was elected vice chairman of the organization which works independently to obtain rare books, manuscripts and other collectors items for Baker Library.

Included in the Brown Collection, which is now being shown in special cases in the Treasure Room corridor of Baker Library, are presentation copies and first editions by Gertrude Bell, Joseph Conrad, T. E. Lawrence, Robert Louis Stevenson, Mary Webb, James Branch Cabell, Mark Twain, A. E. Newton, Kenneth Roberts, Ernest Hemingway, Tobias Smollett, Thackeray, Thoreau, Dickens, and Laurence Sterne,

In April, Mr. Mandel, new chairman of the Friends, gave Dartmouth his fine Hemingway collection, including a manuscript and presentation copy of Farewell to Arms, as well as the author's rare first book issued in Paris.

The new Bruce Rogers Folio Bible, one of the finest books ever produced in the United States, has been presented to the library by Edouard J. Petrequin '25 and his son, Edouard A. Petrequin II '50.

From Allerton C. Hickmott '17 has come the Nonesuch edition of La Fontaine's Fables with copper engravings by Stephen Gooden. Mr. Hickmott also gave, through the Friends, a fine collection of James Elroy Flecker, author of The Golden Journeyto Samarkand, many of the items in slip cases, many rare, and all in mint condition.

A gift of 51 war sketches, three oils and 14 watercolors has been received from Paul Sample '20, Dartmouth's artist in residence. These have been added to the already considerable Sample collection possessed by the College.

Many other gifts have also been reported by the Friends of the Dartmouth Library in recent months. Included among the donors are Dr. Robert M. Stecher '19, H. Lyman Armes '12, George Matthew Adams, Van Wyck Mason, F. R. Colie '18, Thomas W. Streeter '04, Victor Reynolds '27, Thomas M. Beers '34, Ben Ames Williams '10, Mrs. Bella C. Landauer, Erskine Caldwell, Thomas Le Due, Arthur M. Everit '23, Henry S. Embree '30, Dr. H. S. Baketel '95m, Edgar Gilbert '05, Victor M. Cutter '03, Bishop John T. Dallas '24h, and Sumner B. Emerson '17.

NEW CHAIRMAN: Richard H. Mandel '26 of Mt. Kisco, N. Y., who was recently elected Chairman of the Friends of the Dartmouth Library. He has made numerous gifts of rare books to Baker Library.
