PICTURED on this page are three prominent members of the Dartmouth faculty who will retire this month at the close of the academic year. Mr. Goodrich reached the age of 70 on February 9, Professor Grange will be 70 on June 12, and Professor Chivers will reach that age on July 5. Together, they have served Dartmouth faithfully and with distinction for a total of 108 years.
Professor Chivers, faculty member for 44 years and father of four Dartmouth sons of skiing renown, has taught bacteriology and plant pathology in the botany department. Member of many national and New England societies in his field, he has found time to fill numerous civic positions in Hanover, most recently as a member of the Board of Selectmen.
Professor DeGrange, who joined the sociology faculty in 1924 and became a full professor four years later, has specialized in the history of sociological thought and in the development of western culture. His published works include The Science ofIndividuality and The Method of Auguste Comte.
Mr. Goodrich became Dartmouth's Librarian in 1912 when "Wilson Hall served as the library. He helped plan Baker Library, moved there in 1928 and has since directed its growth to 650,000 volumes and a national reputation among college libraries. Author of many articles on skiing and mountain climbing, he was editor of the American Ski Annual from 1934 to 1940. Amherst, his alma mater, awarded him the honorary Doctorate of Letters in 1941.
