1850 One Hundred Years 1950 is an account of Evansville, Indiana written by Louis P. Benezet '99 and distributed by the Evansville National City Bank at the time of its centennial. This is a well illustrated volume of 76 pages. The story starts with the early history of the region, with fights with the Indians among whom was the famous Tucumseh and his brother the Prophet. The Battle of Tippecanoe with General, later President William H. Harrison, is recorded. The story carries an account of Hugh McGary, first settler and of Robert M. Evans, later settler from whom the city derived its name. Here are recorded stories of early industries, boating on the Ohio, of canals, etc. Of interest to Dartmouth men is a short account of Daniel Choate, 1810, who taught in Evansville for twenty years and whose salary his first year was $300. Stories of industries and business are given, including the story of the Canal Bank, later the National City Bank. This volume will surely be of interest to historians and leaders in business.
