ONE of the high spots of the Great Issues Course this year was reached in the first semester's concluding lecture, delivered by Prof. Henry Steele Commager of Columbia University, noted historian and author. The ALUMNI MAGAZINE is privileged to present the greater part of this lecture as its lead article this month. Entitled Free Enterprise in Ideas, the article is a powerful argument for the halting of tendencies in American life that threaten the very roots of democracy. It begins on Page 17.
Together, The Undergraduate Chair (Page 21) and With the D.O.C. (Page 23) tell the story of Dartmouth's 41st Annual Winter Carnival, rated by many as the most successful in the long series of winter frolics. A number of photographs by Adrian Bouchard illustrate these two features.
Along with the College's financial worries there have been bright spots, and one of these is the remarkable growth of the Class Memorial Funds. A report on the present status of the program, and what it means to Dartmouth, appears on Page 25, written by Nichol M. Sandoe Jr. '45, executive director of the program at Hanover fund headquarters.
