THE 100th anniversary of the death of Daniel Webster, on October 24, 1852, and plans for the College to honor her famous son provide the occasion for this month's lead article about Daniel Webster's College Days (Page 18). The author, Edward Connery Lathem '51, who joined the Baker Library staff this summer, devoted his Senior Fellowship to the study of Daniel Webster. Using material in the Dartmouth Collections, he has written perhaps the most comprehensive article ever done on Webster's student days at Dartmouth.
Other articles in this issue, which opens the MAGAZINE'S 45th publication year, deal with Dartmouth men active in the Presidential campaign (Page 24) and with The New Dean, a profile by John Hurd '21 (Page 28).
A new column, The Hanover Scene (Page 27), is introduced this month and will appear occasionally in future issues. Bill McCarter 19, director of athletics, will hold forth on a variety of subjects; we know that with his wit and deft prose style he will acquire a large alumni following. We are happy also to add Judson S. Lyon '40, Assistant Professor of English, to our staff of contributors. He has agreed to fill the new post of Faculty Editor.
