Alumni Council Meets
THE annual midyear meeting of the Dartmouth Alumni Council took place in Cleveland on February 1, with 27 of the Council's 35 members present for a strong attendance showing. President Dickey headed a group of nine representatives from the College who participated in the Council sessions at the Hotel Statler and also attended the annual dinner meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Cleveland at the hotel that evening.
At the Alumni Council meetings, presided over by Justin A. Stanley '33 of Chicago, Council president, the major items for discussion were the 1952 Alumni Fund plans, presented by Committee Chairman Kenneth M. Henderson '16 of Chicago; the growing program of enrollment activity, described by John C. Heston '20 of Philadelphia, chairman of the Committee on Enrollment and also of the Committee on Admissions and Schools; and the recent College developments in public relations, outlined by Francis Brown '25, chairman of the new Committee on Public Relations.
In his talk to the Council about Dartmouth affairs, President Dickey also dealt with public relations, discussing the complexity of the problems in this field and expressing confidence that the new committee would make a major contribution to the welfare of the College. The President also discussed intercollegiate athletics, and expressed the view that the public is looking to the presidents of American colleges to take a larger role in finding answers to the problems that beset college sports. The financial problems in connection with inter collegiate athletics are becoming more acute, and a study of Dartmouth's athletic organization, in the light of present problems, is desirable, Mr. Dickey said.
As another major item of business the Council nominated Charles J. Zimmerman '23 of Hartford, Conn., to be an Alumni Trustee of the College, to fill the vacancy occurring when Nelson A. Rockefeller '30 completes his second five-year term on June 30, 1952.
Nathan K. Parker '26 of Pittsburgh, who reported for the Nominating Committee, also spoke to the Council as senior alumni representative on the Dartmouth Athletic Council. Other committee reports were given by F. William Andres '29 of Boston, chairman of the Committee on Class Gifts; Nichol M. Sandoe '19 of New York, chairman of the Committee on Bequests; and Orton H. Hicks '21 of New York, chairman of the Committee on Dartmouth Films.
Representatives from the College who took part in the meetings included Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College and Alumni Council secretary; Prof. Robert A. McKennan '25, faculty representative on the Council; William H. McCarter '19, director of athletics; Albert I. Dickerson '30, director of admissions; Edward T. Chamberlain '36, executive officer of the College and secretary of the Committee on Enrollment; George H. Colton '35, executive secretary of the Dartmouth Development Council; Nichol M. Sandoe Jr. '45, executive secretary of the Alumni Fund; and Ross Gamble, executive secretary of the Committee on Bequests.
