As the first semester draws near its end and Winter Carnival approaches, the Big Green varsity teams find themselves with one-third to one-half of their winter schedules completed. A quick review shows the basketball quintet with four wins against nine defeats, the hockey squad with three victories against two setbacks, the swimming team with a two and two record, the squash team with three wins, one tie and four defeats, the track team with one loss in the only meet to date, and the skiing team with two team victories in two meets and a number of individual winners in invitational meets. Thus, the total to date (Jan. 17) for all Dartmouth varsity teams shows 12 wins against 17 defeats with one tie contest.
However, so far as league standings go, the Big Green teams are well below par. Losses to Cornell, Columbia and Pennsylvania put the basketball quintet in the Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League cellar; the Indian hockey team with losses to Harvard and Yale ranks near the bottom of the Pentagonal League; and the swimming team, which lost to Harvard and Yale, must also take a low ranking in their loop. This is not as serious as it may sound, however, for league play just started this month and the majority of the remaining contests for Dartmouth are league games. Indeed, far from being discouraged at this point, the Dartmouth teams, particularly in basketball and hockey, are just now showing signs of finding themselves and their play from here on out should show marked improvement with resulting elevation in league standings.
