Although Cornell has long dominated this area, there is a small group of insurgents from the Hanover Plain who have shown the first signs of rebellion within the last year. Our first meeting was at a luncheon held on Thursday before the Cornell-Dartmouth football game last fall. About 15 alumni appeared and heard short talks by newcomers to Ithaca. The first was by Prof. Michael Cardozo '32 of the Law School, and the other by WaltSnickenberger '46 who was recently appointed Assistant to the President of the University.
On Saturday, March 14, we had a cocktail party at Statler Hall in order to celebrate what we had hoped would be a Dartmouth basketball victory that night. Well, we lost the game but not the spirit, or spirits either. Invitations had been sent to the clubs in Elmira, Syracuse, and Rochester, as well as to all the alumni in Ithaca. Among the 30 people present were Bill Hale '44 and JohnOsborne '45 who had driven all the way from Rochester. It was well worth it because Doggy Julian took time out from his team to give us an interesting insight on the athletic situation at Hanover.
There are no other events planned for this scholastic year, but it is hoped that the alumni in this area will soon become more active. A large part of them are graduate students, therefore our turnover is quite rapid. Nevertheless I feel that a strong nucleus of faculty and townspeople exist which could, in the future, build a worthwhile Dartmouth Club in Ithaca. If there are any alumni in this area that I haven't contacted I wish they would write and perhaps we can show the Big Red that there's a lot of Green in their town.
