TORRID was the word for Hanover weather when 109 '19ers, with wives, daughters, sons and guests assembled for our 34th or advanced 35th, Reunion. Sixty-one loyal classmates were on hand and while this is not the largest reunion we have had and there are many who were missed, it was a most enjoyable one for all hands.
After checking in at Russell Sage Hall, and acquiring a green visored '19 cap for the men, a Dartmouth scarf for the gals, and a button for everyone, the first event was the cocktail and supper party at the Outing Club House, '19's favorite spot. Here, Cotty Larmon arranged for a fine dinner preceded by plenty of refreshments. The weather permitted the affair to be held on the lawn to the rear of the Club House, in a most attractive setting adjoining Occom Pond. (So far as is known up to now, no one fell in.)
The next event Friday evening was the President's reception where President and Mrs. Dickey, assisted by Sid and Mrs. Hayward, graciously received all remaining upright from the eight reuning classes. After this traditional event, most of the class returned to Russell Sage and the tent where Johnnie Chipman held forth on the piano and there was much singing of varied quality, and much conversation as to who had been doing what since our last reunion.
Saturday morning some forty-odd of the class assembled in Carpenter for the best class meeting we have ever had, with our retiring President, Jack McCrillis in charge. Max Norton, another retiring officer after 25 years of invaluable service to the class, gave the treasurer's report, and a small token of appreciation, a desk lighter, was presented to Max by Spider Martin on behalf of the class. Your Secretary who should be, but doesn't seem to be retiring, gave a brief report and suggested the adoption of class dues of $5.00 per year, to include subscription to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, which was later voted.
A resolution commending Phil Bird for his hard work on the Fund and wishing him a speedy recovery from his current illness, was read and signed by all classmates present at the meeting and by the balance of the class whom Jack McCrillis caught up with eventually (there was a vague report that some members were inhaling Casey Bevan's famous Saturday morning pick-up, BUBBLY). NickSandoe spoke briefly on the Bequest program of which Roger Clark is class chairman and urged the class to give it thoughtful consideration. Cotty Larmon, chairman of the nominating committee, presented the slate of officers for the next five years—Rock Hayes, President; Bob Paisley, Vice Pres.; Ray Adams, Treasurer, and, unfortunately, reelected your groping Secretary for another term.
More about general news in a later communication to the class via the Newsletterthe fall gathering of the class is on, as of now, at Windsor—details in the late summer. The date is the weekend of Oct. 16.
Next came the Alumni Luncheon to which, as has been the custom over the last few years, the Dartmouth wives and all guests, sons and daughters were invited. Our class was honored by the fact that the speaker for the Alumni was none other than our own Bob Proctor, part of whose fine speech appears elsewhere in this issue of the MAGAZINE.
Later on in the afternoon, the class made its way to the Lake Morey Inn at Fairlee, Vt., for our combined picnic and dinner. Some of the gang tried out the golf course, a few went for a swim, and everyone had a fine time. Ken Huntington was in charge of the affair and did everything possible to make it successful. Ray Legg, reunion chairman, also deserves a big Wah-Hoo-Wah from everyone for arranging the. over-all program which met with general approval.
Nothing was planned for Sunday except the Memorial Service, which, combined with 1913 and 1918, did honor to the 21 classmates who have passed on since our last reunion. At the class meeting, Jack Williams outlined our memorial book program, which, in lieu of flowers, places a fine book in the Baker Library in memory of a deceased classmate.
The weekend was a great get-together of '19ers and, outside of the "regulars," it was especially nice to see Lou Stone, who hadn't been in Hanover for fifteen years, RowlandPollard, Cliff Belknap, Walt Cooper, SpenDodd, Kaby Johnson, Bob French, Phil Ransom, John Shelburne and Heber Ashley. Also a special vote of thanks to Paul Halloran for the fine job he has done in editing the class movies which were shown after dinner at Lake Morey and were the source of a lot of laughs.
