WITH the 1954 Alumni Fund providing 36 per cent of the total, gifts and bequests to Dartmouth College amounted to $1,761,644 during the fiscal year 1953-54, it was announced last month by John F. Meek '33, Treasurer and Vice President of the College. Although less than the $2,024,162 received the year before, the total was the fifth largest for any one year in the history of the College.
Gifts and bequests added $780,215 to the endowment funds of the College. These were distributed $272,657 for scholarships and loans, $262,460 unrestricted, $170,640 for Alumni Fund endowment, $47,056 for instruction and the library, $19,625 for the associated schools, $2,388 for plant, and $5,389 for miscellaneous.
The largest bequest of the year was $1152,590 received upon termination of a trust created by the will of Charles F. Mathewson '82, a Trustee of the College from 1894 to 1915. An additional $30,019 was received under the will of Guy C. Richards '96, bringing the total of his bequest to $178,955. From Mabel C. Jenkins of Mt. Vernon, N. Y., Dartmouth received a bequest of $25,000 in memory of her husband, the late Frederick W. Jenkins '00; and from the Edward Tuck Trust $25,832 as additional payment of accumulated income. A $10,000 unrestricted bequest from Frank M. Surrey '99 was also added to endowment.
Gifts for endowment were headed by $85,326 from the Class of 1929, whose memorial fund contributions during the year increased the class fund to $117,156 as of June 30, 1954. From the 1954 Alumni Fund, $60,000 was applied to endowing two additional Alumni Fund Scholarships. An anonymous gift of $37,113 established the Class of 1914 Scholarship und, and $34,587 was received from Edwin R. Bartlett '04 to establish a fund in memory of his grandfather, Samuel Colcord Bartlett, 1836, President of the College from 1877 to 1892, and his father, Edwin Julius Bartlett '72, a member of the faculty from 1878 to 1920. To establish a scholarship in memory of his son, Arthur J. Cohen Jr. '37, a gift of $17,969 was made by Arthur J. Cohen '03. Other gifts for endowment were $10,041 from Kent H. Smith '15 to establish a fund in his name, $10,000 from the Arbuckle-Jamison Foundation for scholarships, $10,000 from Mrs. Lavinia Rose Wilson to establish the Albion B. Wilson '95 Memorial Fund for the Treasure Room of Baker Library, and $10,774 given anonymously for the Aldebaran Scholarship Fund.
Exclusive of the $550,000 of Alumni Fund proceeds used for 1953-54 operating expenses, the year's gifts for current use amounted to $350,416. Among these were $48,000 given anonymously for special purposes, $39,275 from George H. Howard '07 in support of undergraduate faculty compensation, $35,000 from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for business research at Tuck School, $35,000 from the Fund for the Advancement of Education in support of the teaching internship program, $27,498 from the Carnegie Foundation for retirement allowances, $27,500 from the Carnegie Corporation of New York in support of the Russian Studies program and of research in civil-military relations, $26,000 from the Rockefeller Foundation for individual projects of faculty members, and $10,000 from Albert Bradley '15 in support of a lecture program at Tuck School.
In addition to gifts and bequests during the year, the College received $26,808 as income from trusts in the hands of others.
