A VARIETY of valuable additions were brought to Baker collections through the efforts of Friends of the Library during the summer months. Perc S. Brown, chairman of the executive committee, made another gift of a number of rare books, which include the fine George W. Panter copy of Oliver Goldsmith's TheVicar of Wakefield in two volumes; a copy of Poe's Mesmerism "In ArticuloMortis" and Poe's Eureka, 1848; Nathaniel Hawthorne's set of the twelve volumes of Addison and Steele's Spectator; Queen Elizabeth's copy (with her arms stamped on the sides) of Thomas à Kempis Of theImitation of Christ; Samuel Johnson's The Plan of a Dictionary, 1747; and one of the rarest Quaker broadsides extant: A True Relation of the ProceedingsAgainst Certain Quakers, London, 1660; as well as other volumes.

One of the finest collections of juveniles in the country was given by James E. Knott of New London, Conn., and consists of nearly one thousand early juveniles by Oliver Optic, Ralph Henry Barbour, Horatio Alger, Harry Castlemon and Edward S. Ellis.
