Rink Report

DAVIS HOCKEY RINK, in its first season with artificial ice, had a busy time, as indicated by both the number of hours of use and the scope of activities. Dartmouth teams, skaters from high schools and preparatory schools, intramural groups, and the general and small-fry public — all took full advantage of the prolonged ice season. The newly renovated rink was made possible by combined gifts of $110,000, which were formally accepted by President Dickey on behalf of the College from Herbert F. Darling '26, chairman of the Friends of Dartmouth Hockey Committee, at dedication ceremonies December 4.

Beginning operations on November 9, the 1953-54 season of the Davis Rink was clocked by DCAC statisticians at 639 total hours of use. Forty per cent of this time was taken up by the practice and games of the varsity (149 hours) and freshman (110 hours) hockey players, who competed in a combined total of 25 games. Intramural games, numbering 93, us-ed 14 per cent of the hours; while the skating public was provided with 64 hours in the rink. The Hanover Skating Club, made up of figure-skating faculty members, students and townspeople, rented the rink for 128 hours or 20 per cent of the total.

For Hanover High School the rink proved a valuable aid, providing its team twenty hours for practice and seven hours for games. Managed by Jack Manchester '33, the Hanover Storm Kings had a successful season with nine games, thanks to the 44 hours of rink time they had for games and practice. Some 78 of the 639 hours were used by non-Dartmouth teams. The first season with the rink's long-awaited artificial ice system has abundantly proved that it is a welcome asset to Hanover community life as well as to the activities of varsity, freshman and intramural hockey players within the College.
