Leading Classes in Giving
March 1955

THE Record of Total Known Giving by Living Dartmouth Classes was tabulated in detail in our January 1954 issue. All gifts and bequests for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1954, have now been added. Totals in all categories and breakdowns of totals may be obtained by writing to the Director of Research, Dartmouth Development Council. The tables below show the top fifteen leading classes in four categories.

There were no changes in the first four leaders in Current Use, Endowment and Plant, and Total Giving. Following these four leaders there were a number of changes. In Current Use giving 1907 moved up from sixth to fifth, 1919 from tenth to ninth, 1927 from thirteenth to eleventh, and 1924 from fifteenth to twelfth. In Endowment and Plant giving four classes - 1915, 1914, '1903, 1896 each advanced one place over last year, and 1900 joined the leaders by replacing 1886. In Total giving 1915 moved up from seventh to fifth, 1914 from ninth to eighth, 1930 from thirteenth to twelfth, and two newcomers, 1907 and 1929, replaced 1911 and 1918.

In the case of the fifteen classes which last year added most to their respective totals, gifts and bequests from individuals were responsible in large measure for the class showings. In only four classes - 1923, 1927, 1919 and 1921—did Alumni Fund giving account for over 50% of the class total, while in two cases - 1929 and 1930 - Memorial Fund giving accounted for the majority of the total.

The total given to Dartmouth last year by the fifteen leading classes in this category amounted to $696,177. For all seventy-four living classes it amounted to $1,326,707.
