We had the privilege of dropping a line to the daughter of "Granraere" who took a great liking to Paul Miner in Soissons during World War I — got him plenty of Sucre from the town mayor. There was another nice place in Soissons - a boulangerie - and there Paul was in high favor also and used to get his gateaus, which he always willingly shared with ambulanciers Chers Ned Ross, Stan Jones, LewPounds and the writer. Some day if '18 has a reunion in Soissons, the keys to the city will be turned over to Paul Miner.
While big Bill Christgau was up in New Haven he had a nice visit with Eric Ball and promised to give the prominent insurance man Tom Sturgess a ring.... Pauline andPaul Sperry, V.P. and Sect. Pond Lilly Textile Finishing Co., New Haven, were up to Hanover over Christmas time, staying at the Inn. They get up there a lot and have themselves a fine time. Paul was the old roomey of George Murphy - is a great yachtsman and belongs to Pine Orchard, Corinthians, Essex YC. Good old Tom Sturgess, the roomey of Fat Rowell and Linn Seiler, was Commodore of the Pine Orchard Yacht Club squadron. What boaty fellows! Wish we could see something of them! Maybe they'll sail down the Sound to NYC and give us an '18er dinner aboard ship.
Last Feb. 18, Al Rice flew down to Pensacola with his troop where they saw the new jets taking off from the carriers and spent four lovely days while Marjorie was in Pennsylvania. Coming back up 30,000 feet Al said they had to pass around the oxygen to keep from getting goofey (It wasn't a pressurized cabin job.). Beginning World War II the newly-commissioned officers of the Navy received their orders and were usually indoctrinated by hardworking Al Rice, associated with Lawrence Marks Co., with large institutional accounts in New York, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Cleveland. Al and Marj have a lovely 200-yr-old farmhouse on the Cape that Al's dad enjoyed for years. The biggest job Al ever did was getting young men for Naval Aviation, and he got loads of them. Al's also been a member of the Heisman Memorial Football Trophy Committee for many years.... The old 2nd Lt. in Field Artillery, World War I, Ev Young, the Westchester contractor who has done some fantastic buildings for the Reader's Digest, and old roomey of Jay LeFevre, was basking with Katherine some of Dec. and Jan. at their lovely place at Delray Beach, making a few flights to N. Y. to supervise his booming business.
Yes, that's Mary's and Tommy O'Connell's oldest son, who's just been made executive asst. to Pres. Dickey. Good old Stumpie Ban noted for us in 1947 that the distinction of being 1918's No. 1 father undoubtedly has been won by Tom O'Connell (and No. 1 outstanding mother, Mary), realtor and golfer of Worcester, Mass. In 1950 Thomas E., the eldest son was elected Pres. of his class, and the following year, Geoffrey was elected Pres. of the Class of '51.
Thoughtful Chaunce Hood (in old Camion Section 133 in France, World War I) won distinction recently in bringing to the American Field Service Club in N.Y.C. new wonderful, French, colored posters of that era. They say of Chaunce, while on leave in Paris, he attended Gen. Pershing's tribute to Lafayette, but lost enduring fame by one foot. He was sitting on a stone next to a French Colonial soldier, and all the official pictures had that soldier in them.
Always a man with great human interest stories (Naval Aviation #204 in World War I, with service in England and France) JudgeDon Macaulay gave an interesting talk at the monthly luncheon of the Mass. Republican Press Club a few weeks back. He and pretty Laura, built a lovely home in Longmeadow, Mass., in 1949. Laura will always be remembered as the girl who brought to our 30th reunion her best evening gown; then fell dead asleep and didn't awaken until next morning and the whole shindig was over.... Irene and Bill Dutelle, in Springfield, Ill., had a big time when daughter Anne (dePauw) was married at a big ceremony on Feb. 13. She is the night food supervisor of Stoffer's in Pittsburgh, and he is Asst. Manager (working together, I'd say). Bill sees occasionally Gene Clark and Lang Robinson who says,
"Bill is just too damned modest, because Bill has general supervision of the spending of approximately $64,000,000 each year allocated to all the counties, cities and villages for country roads. He's an authority and has been appearing on programs and conferences at the U. of Ill. and at St. Louis."
Minetta and Syl Morey have been very interested in the Myrin Institute Inc. for adult education at Adelphi College in Garden City, and the proceedings of an exceedingly interesting booklet we hope to read, were com- pleted right in Syl's office. Minetta and Syl keep their lovely home out in Garden City (also weekend in the Berkshires - next to lovely Anne Marlowe's and Marty Straus's delightful retreat) but live through the week at 41 Park Av. - just an easy roll out of bed to Syl's office in the Empire State Bldg.... A postcard from Tom Tarrant says, "Sorry I couldn't get my 14 stomach into the '18 dinner. Folks think my 1/4 is now 5/4th the way I'm shovelling it in." Barbara and Torn Tarrant have a lot of fun and Tom's mother chaperoned many parties at the Phi Sig house at Hanover and went on until nearly 90; and Tommy expects to add 10 years to that.... Harold Hess '03, who labored long and hard in this Vineyard and in the canyons of N.Y.C., dropped us a card to say how much they've always enjoyed Marion andfrank Clahane and Dotty and George Davis when they visit there every year at Sugar Hill, N. H.... After going through surgery, the report is that Johnny Cunningham is fine. Gets a little weary working back into the job again, but "...what gets his goat is this 'no drinking' - he's a martyr no less - and no smoking." But Johnny, you just take up Bro. Don's '13 suggestion and go fishing off the Florida Keys. You might take your skates along — it's been cool, they say.
The old roomey of Amos Blandin and CliffDaniels, Johnny Johnston and lovely Ann, have two weddings in their family this year. — Son Gordon is a mechanical engineer with Natl. Biscuit Co in Atlanta, and will marry in June a co-ed from Maine. There is the big wedding of Irene whose engagement was announced at the Covleigh Club last Thanksgiving time at a big party.... lake Bingham tells us on the Ist of Feb. it was 2° above in Hanover. Said Jake, "The sky was clear, the air the kind one likes to inhale, but with all, it was sad to be there - Jay Gile's ('16) remains were going to their final resting place. Amos Blandin was pall bearer, Rolf Syvertsen an usher. I saw other '18ers; Sy said Ed Booth might come."
Jay Gile and Jake's brother were classmates. Jay Gile's father and three of Jake's relatives were all classmates in '87 - saturated in the past histories of Dartmouth College.
Hubie McDonough makes a good defense of the marking system by letters at Central H. S. in Manchester, N. H., and he pointed out that the system that preceded the present one, that of marking by numbers, was pretending to possess an accuracy which it was impossible for it to possess. Doc Reuling, the eye, ear, nose and throat man in Waterloo, lowa, and the old roomey of JackHurlbut (we all wish we saw more of you and Rosamond), has a son at Exeter Everybody who reads Bill Cunningham's '19 column m the Boston papers certainly enjoyed Bill's visit with Amos Blandin.
Cliff Meredith, the old roomey of Harvey Hood and Jack Storrs; once News Editor of the N. Y.Daily Mirror, having gotten his training as Asst. Business Mgr. of The Dartmouth, sent us from his hideout at 8 Old Military Road, Saranac, N. Y., something his brother Russell Meredith '10 (who labors valiantly in the Vineyard with us), sent to his classmates, showing the board at the Dartmouth Dining Asso. in Oct. 1906. For breakfast: rolled oats, 5ø, small sirloin steak 25ø lamb chops 15ø, baked sausage 10ø — (what did they do in those days, go out-and split logs?) - griddle cakes and syrup 8ø, french fried potatoes 3ø, baked potatoes 2ø, banana 30, California prunes 5ø and layer figs 5ø.... Had a nice letter from Hunt Bennett, Betty and Homer's son (has 2 daughters) who has the world by the tail on the West Coast, and doing a grand job for Time magazine. Elizabeth and Homer (Swede to most of us) spent several weeks out there last October and for 10 days they took in Carmel, Yosemite, Reno, and the Sierras. We don't know that Bennie is still Pres. of the Chamber of Commerce, Medina, Ohio, but he has been in the past.
Time marches on. Shorty Alden spent his 3rd Christmas at the U.S. Veterans Hospital, Providence, R. I. Shorty, the old roomey of Mel Southwick, wrote us about a cane, and Shorty wondered if he could get one of those senior canes at Hanover — so a letter was pumped to Johnny Plane and bless me the seniors up there don't care for their canes at all. Said Johnny -
"I've hunted all through our shop and ware-house. As you know, the canes were redesigned in 1946. Last year, so few bought the canes, it was decided to sell out, and turn the money over to the College - and last year the Senior Cane was done away with."
From Phi Beta Kappa, Rhodes Scholar Harold Glendenning (went back to London in 1953 for the 100th anniversary of the Rhodes scholarship) comes a note -
"In my work with the Anti-Trust Div. of Dept. of Justice, I enjoy it, because for about 20 yrs. I've been on the other side; now I'll see it all from the government angle. I have always wanted to do a bit of public service. Now I'm in a position to do it. I became a grandfather last Sept. 27th.
Glen sees little chance to get down to his favorite haunts of Palm Beach, and the Marina Hotel at Key West this March You saw the headlines in the papers "Dartmouth Wins Swim — Glover Double Victor as Big Green Beats Navy 44-40." Yup, that's the Johnnie Glover that Ruth and Curt have trained. Brother Bill was beautifully coached under Kiputh at Yale who gave Bill wonderful training and real appreciation of his fine physical equipment. Kiputh recently sent Johnnie congratulations on his outstanding record and with him joined other varsity Yale swimmers who have admired Johnnie's talents.
Clippings come from all over from enthusiastic '18 classmates of Les Granger. He's an indefatigable speaker, carrying _ great power. Jack Hurlbut sent us a clipping of Les's splendid talk at the high school in Springfield, Mass., in Feb. Just about 3 yrs. ago, now, Jack and Rosamond were back visiting with their old friends on the Riviera, about 7 miles from Cannes.... So sorry, Hort(Chandler). A postcard from Hort said "Your slip is showing — my son's name is Harvey Horton Chandler '49, who has now become engaged to Miss Suzanne Martha Piper. We are very happy about it for she is a lovely girl." Hort, the old roomey of Howard Robinson and Curt Glover, was in World War I and on very active duty in the 2nd World War, for which he received a citation for "exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services on Moratai, Netherlands, East Indies, from Aug. 7th 1944 to Jan. 25th 1945." For his outstanding record, Hort was awarded the Legion of Merit.
In the old high school at Medford, Mass., where the writer, Em Morse and Charlie Weston graduated summa cum laude, Ned Ross's Oma (Vassar and Radcliffe) is now going there to teach for her first job We received an exceedingly attractive booklet of a summer camp, "Birch Rock Camp, Lake McWain, E. Waterford, Maine, and how it made us long to be a kid again. It is run by the ever successful Bill Brewster and his wife Aunt Onie." Bill did an outstanding job at Kimball Union Academy where Dartmouth got some very good men.... All '18ers in Florida, March 15, head for the distinguished Flamingo Hotel at Miami Beach, about 12th St. and Biscayne Bay, of which Bill Bemis is Pres.
Says Bill Bemis, in a letter of Feb. 11th - "The Flamingo Hotel may have been sold — there are probably dozens of Flamingo Hotels - in various spots around the country, but not the 'fabulous Flamingo - the aristocrat of Florida hotels. That old bird is still spitting on the sticks trying to hold the old nest together. As a matter of fact, I think Al Gottschaldt told me that the Dartmouth Alumni Assn. in Miami is having its annual dinner there sometime around March 15th. To those in Florida, then, let's take it in. How about you, Veronica and Bill Blanchard? Helen and OttoKubin? Johnny and Florence Thayer? Kathertneand Ev Young? Louise and Pat Case? Alys andFrank Grisivold? Veronica and Bill Blanchard?Alice and Bill Bemis? Dan Shea and Fats Hardie?Marge and Phil Boynton? Kay and John Cunningham? Al and Becie Gottschaldt? Mildred and JayLeFevre? Elizabeth and Alex Proctor? Ethel andMonk Cameron? Helen and Paul Miner? Who else's in Florida?
Says good old Stirling Wilson '16, who also labors alongside of us in the Vineyard:
"Sorry I don't see more '18ers here in Washington except Larry Pope. He and I sang in a quartet together called the Debonairs with a baritone Lt. Cdr. Joe Huber '40, who has just been ordered to the Helena, Adm. Pride's flagship, which broke the combination up. It was always a great treat to hear Leigh Rogers 16 and Stun Jones exchange persiflage - I could listen to them for hours."
