'18s BIGGEST TURNOUT IN YEARS—N. Y. D.AL. DINNER 2/19/42—We're indebted to the facile pen of Stan Jones for the following account— "Prez Sig Larmon got off to a good start by announcing—'we will now be led in song by .our pianist—Ernie Earley.' (This must have cost our "P for the Future" man a purty penny) Earley instigated considerable hurling of rolls, napery, etc. (says Stanley) in the course of Prof. Pelenyi's speech. Doubtless overcome with the success of confusing the Prez.
JAYSUS JACQUES LEFEVRE, THE Free French Gaul, was in his usual high fettle. He had things coming his way. . . .especially the menus, butts, and silverware. Hard by him sprawled Everett Hale (One Life to Give) Young, who held all hands spellbound by his tales of his most recent construction job.... an Air Raid Shelter for Walter (Little Boy Blew) Winchell.
The armed forces were represented by Lt. Commander Al Rice, and by CappyMorrison. Both were well turned out in blue and tan, respectively. Fritz Cassebeer, the Steinmetz of the Dahlia world, lent his smiling presence to the group, and dipped the beak in various malted brews. J. Steve(What's New) Martinez was on hand, his wavy white mane distilling considerable envy in the hearts of those less bountifully endowed. (Ah there, Krausemeyer, you cigar-smoking cue ball!).
It was good, too, to gaze upon the cascading terraces of Fatso Sheldon, and to grip his toilworn hand. The Human Laundry Bag has not lost his warming smile down the years. Mandy Crothers who had the ill fortune to draw Blimp Morey for a roomie in New Hamp, reappeared. Mandy says he still pelts a tennis ball around with his old skill. "The legs, though," adds Mandy, "aren't quite the same tempered steel springs." The core and heart of recurrent disturbances at one table proved to be Musty Mike Pounds, the Squire of Larchmont. Musty is not speaking to his wife these days. She is using the car for extensive Red Cross work. And every mile on the tires puts a new scowl on the Squire's mobile brow.
HORT KENNEDY was a fine figure of a man, recalling the thrilling days of the 1918 freshman picture. Hort got more kick out of them than out of the war, we bet. Another notable of the fiscal fraternity was Sproule Ross, the gaunt guardian of the funds in the caverns of the Chase. Andy reports that Morey had been laid up again, but that he would soon be about. The Wart (now practically a full-grown bunion in size and shape) was much in evidence: and still retains some semblance of a response to a swift and unsuspected jab in the rear. We missed the Ole Jedge, F. (as in "Fearless") Runyon Colie, who was detained out Jersey way to fine a few over-time parking violaters. Likewise D. (Stocks & Blondes) Shea, who was detained? at home. Had to go over some new numbers in his old ledger, no doubt. It was good to clink goblets with Harvey (Grade A) Hood, who spun some spectacular skiing stories to his popeyed elderly audience. We expect to hear, any day now, that the Prex has been taken ill of a broken pelvis—up Ver-mont way."
OTHERS PRESENT—Dick Holton, (Comp- troller of 100 million East N. Y. Savings) the sturdy skier, who successfully navigated Suicide Hill No. 6 at Woodstock, Vt. with Stumpie Barr; skier Harvey Hood squirmed when asked if he also made it intact; Spike Puryear, loyal get-em-out PeteColwell (Lewis Lee wrote Pete that he has a fighting job at Naval Air Station, Seattle, Washington) School Board Chairman George Davis. Bill Christgau, the Gen. Roemmel field man of Metropolitan Life; Eric Ball (New Haven oyster man who throws his big party in Norwich, Vt. in March, consuming one barrel of oysters); Red Wilson (infanticipating) TyTyrrel, Elder of the Church, Dave Skinner,Dwight Sargent, Steve Mahoney (who sure missed his debating opponent BobFish—as did we all), Dave Garratt (reporting some 50 returns on '18's 25th gift to the College), Bill Coulson, Homer Bennett and Johnny Johnston (mfgs. parachutes for Gov't).
WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT DAVE GARRATT'S MAILING FOR 25TH GIFT—Cort Horr "send me a bank and I'll pass up X scotches and sodas and make my pledge that way".... Swiftie Barnes "if you don't think Dartmouth needs this try asking for a small scholarship"... Doc Joe Quincy "every man in the class should take this opportunity to show his appreciation of what Dartmouth has done for him". ...Jack Hurlbut "Times are hard and uncertain but this is an honest debt and must be paid."
Mac Arthur's doing his job....let's do ours, for the defense of a Dartmouth we love.... peel off your regular check for Dick. . . today please
