DURING the summer the College concluded a purchase and sale agreement that will give it possession, on January 2, 1957, of the 84-acre Garipay Farm which is located off Lyme Road near the ski jump. The farm lies adjacent to the Hanover Precinct south of Reservoir Road between Lyme and Rip Roads.
Except for the possibility of selling house lots along the west side of Rip Road, the College has no immediate plans for the tract. It has been acquired to provide additional flexibility in meeting Dartmouth's long-range plant needs, now being studied by the Trustees Planning Committee. With the assistance of its consulting architect, the College is endeavoring to prepare a comprehensive plan, integrated with Hanover's own town planning studies, to guide the future development of all its property. John F. Meek '33, Vice President and Treasurer, states that portions of the Garipay Farm might be used for educational, housing or recreational purposes, or might conceivably serve to free areas closer to the main campus for educational use.
The Trustees have stressed the importance, both to the College and to the town, of ensuring an orderly and attractive development of this land area, which borders the principal approach to the village from the north. The farm, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Raymond W. Garipay, is one of the oldest in Hanover.
