The Dartmouth varsity lacrosse team, captained by All-American goalie Clem Malin, spent the spring vacation on the Adelphi College campus at Long Island, N.Y. For the most part the Indians concentrated on practice sessions and scrimmages against Hamilton, Hofstra, Adelphi and Penn State. In the two formal games played the Indian stickmen bowed to Hofstra and Penn State by identical 6-4 scores.
With eight lettermen returning from last year's team, which won seven and lost five games, Coach Tom Dent has a reasonably strong" nucleus for his 1956 squad. The returning lettermen include Captain Clem Malin at goal; John Benisch and John Bohn at attack; midfielders Tom Conlon, Lee Gammill, Cal Perry and Link Spaulding; and Wally Pugh at the defensive post.
At this writing the Big Green's defensive unit looks strong, but the attack and midfield departments need further seasoning as shown by the fact that only eight goals were scored out of some sixty attempts during the spring games.
On the basis of the spring trip and sessions to date, the first team shapes up with Clem Malin in the goal; veterans Wally Pugh and Lee Gammill and sophomore Dick Darby on defense; the all-veteran group of Cal Perry, Link Spaulding and Tom Conlon at midfield; and veterans John Benisch and John Bohn with sophomore Dave Rice on the attack line.
Clayt Freeman and Dick Pew are promising midfield alternates, while Howie Wisotzkey, Dick Frisch and Hoyt Goodrich add depth to the attack section. Jim Brackett, Bob Abbott and Jim Preston rate as capable defensemen.
