With sleeves rolled up and plenty of news to pass along, I'll get right into the business at hand but not before saying thanks to the field correspondents and reminding those of you from whom I have not received any up-to-date information that it would be appreciated.
Last summer, French Lick, Ind., played host to an illustrious trio for a long weekend. As chief organizers Paul and Del Torian got Bob and Marge Dewey along with Tedand Caroline Schoonbeck to bring their golf clubs and a fresh deck of cards for a few days of enjoyment. While Tewks gave Ted a good run for his money on the links, I understand Bob was battling the three girls right down to the last putt where he finished strong to win one up. At the bridge table, Bob insists he would have done much better with a pinochle deck. With the weekend over, Bob was back hustling Coca-Cola in his capacity as a regional account executive for McCann-Erickson. Paul returned to running the Torian Insurance Agency in Evansville while Ted found himself in the merger business as the Schoonbeck Furniture Co. in Grand Rapids prepared to become a division of a larger company.
Of further note from Bob Dewey is word of a new neighbor, as of last spring, when Glenn and Winnie Green with their four children moved in next door. It seems that Jack Scolaro who is seen quite frequently around Detroit scurrying newspaper space as a newspaper representative and partner in Scolaro, Meeker and Scott, steered Glenn to the real estate office. Glenn is peddling padding for upholstery-mainly to the automotive industry for car seats. Bob Waldron, a Grosse Pointe attorney, heads the House group in the State Legislature where as a Representative he has authored several bills dealing with the control of sex deviates. After more than ten years with Federal-Mogul-Bower Bearings, Inc., Hank Reynolds decided to change careers and go into the teaching profession. A summer of schooling helped prepare for his fall classes in an elementary school in Grosse Pointe.
Earlier last summer, Charlie Sturz was elected a vice-president, Branch Operations, by the Yellow Manufacturing Acceptance Corp. which conducts a financing operation similar to GMAC only pertaining to GMC trucks and Euclid earthmovers. Charlie joined YMAC in 1953 as comptroller and was elected treasurer earlier this year having come from the financial staff of General Motors Corp. Spending several transient months in Detroit was Bob Highmark working on an assignment for Booz, Allen and Hamilton, management consultants. And taking a summer trip that routed them through Dewey land were George and MaryAnn Rounds who decided a year ago that camping and traveling the country-side with their three children could be fun. The latest trip covered some 4500 miles through eight states and two Provinces as they crossed into Canada at Sault Ste. Marie. With lots of places left to visit, the Rounds are looking forward to the summers ahead when they will roll their station wagon around the country using the many camp sites provided by the states and national parks.
With fall elections here, there is no lack of '42 participation, although current information points to special activity in New England. Having completed his second term as an alderman-at-large in the Melrose city government, Paul Vaitses announced his candidacy for re-election, stressing in particular his concern over steadily rising cost of the local government. Let's all hope he can provide a solution for there are a lot of local governments that would like to know the answer. Also completing a second term is Ed McLaughlin, Councillor in the city of Boston and a candidate for re-election. Ed is an ardent advocate of more off-street parking spaces in downtown Boston and has to his credit, as leader of the Council's committee on appropriations and finance, the largest reduction in the city budget effected in recent years. In York, Me., Jim Erwin, local attorney, announced that he will be a candidate for the office of State senator following several years of active participation on the York County Republican Committee.
Charlie Brown was recently promoted to riant Manager of Rex Corp., Acton, Mass., and also reports that he frequently sees genial Pete Bixby, leading surgeon at Beverly Hospital and architect Ralph Morrison, With offices in Lawrence, Mass., who besides having just moved to Beverly is also the proud father of a first child, a daughter named Elise.
Another recent change finds Matt Beecher of Harrington Park, N. J., in the capacity of Director of the new Supervising Development Course with the American Management Assoc. with which he has been associated for several years. Matt's work has frequently sent him traveling across the country and he currently is looking forward to being at AMA's new Lake Saranac location this winter. He periodically sees Chick Emslie of International Latex Corp. at AMA's meetings.
What is Florsheim Shoe's loss is J. F. McElwain Company's gain. Dick Burns has rejoined the latter company in Nashua, N. H., to handle sales of other'than Thorn McAn stores and is more than happy to again have a location so close to Hanover. It was a bit of a problem to properly Indianize his two sons while living in Evanston, Ill.
Ship Shops Inc., Bass River, Cape Cod, Mass., A. L. Priddy, President, represents Al s new addition to his otherwise active insurance business. It's an up and coming boat yard, specializing in sail and motor boats up to 30 feet with excellent facilities for gas and mechanical work and improving water front facilities. Anyone with a boat" to lay up? '
After years of owning and operating Dexter's, Dex and Genelle Richards have sold their Sunapee, N. H., resort to a former guest, Bill King '27, of Marshfield, Mass., who took over management of the lodge last month. Except for the addition of a pool for next summer, its operation and schedule remain unchanged. For the time being, Dex and Genelle are leasing a private home in the area and we expect to hear more later as to their plans for the future.
