Dartmouth's lack of a top-notch number one runner has shown up in the first two meets of the season. Opening against a strong Manhattan team at Van Cortland Park in New York, the Green runners lost by a 15-40 score. The Manhattan harriers captured the first seven places in the meet, and sophomore Art Pritchard finished eighth. Senior John Ceeley placed 15th, while Tom Lennox, another letterman, came in 17th.

Captain Dick Nau was unable to compete against Manhattan because of a leg injury, and was unable to run in the triangular meet with Yale and Columbia, where Dartmouth finished third. Yale dominated that meet, with Columbia .edging out the Big Green for second place.

Captain Dick . Nau's enforced absence has moved sophomore Art Pritchard, who captained the freshman team last year, up to the number one spot, with Lennox and Ceeley following. Juniors Mike Nolen and Mike Kistler have helped and sophomore Ed Berkowitz has also shown well to date. Other sophomores on the team include Bob Becker, Bob Coyler, Bruce Henry, Marty Budd and Pete Hawks.
