FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO A JOB
March 1957 DONALD W. CAMERON '35

By Adrian A. Paradis '34. New York: DavidMcKay Company, Inc., 1956. 249 pp. $3.50.

The jacket of this book suggests that it "was inspired by the sparsity of helpful material directed toward a large number of young people who cannot count on a college education to aid them in the business world." Mr. Paradis has admirably succeeded in achieving his goal. Brief yet comprehensive, this easily read book does give the high school reader an excellent start in considering job opportunities.

In four to eight pages each, a variety of industries are reviewed, first with a statement of the purposes of the industry, the job opportunities offered, and with valuable, up-to-date descriptions of the day-to-day work to be found in these jobs. The descriptions are realistic but readable and interesting. Each industrial section is further summarized by suggested reading, usually a good solid text in the field, as well as an extended reading list complete with names and addresses of publishers. As a result From High School to a Job does serve as a springboard to giving the student a broad orientation.

A second portion of the book is devoted to counseling the student in finding the right job. Here Mr. Paradis has ably condensed a wealth of sound advice for the high school student; in fact, the material contained can prove valuable to the college student as well.

A third part of the book is devoted to aiding the student in preparing for his career and again offers sound advice. In short, Mr. Paradis, by thoughtfully considering the position of his intended reader has brought together a wealth of information studded with good examples that can quickly orientate the student to his problem. From High School to a Job, therefore, will serve as an outstanding first reference book on job hunting for any high school library.
