Mr. Homer No Show '47 265 Where Were You Place Be There In '62 U. S. A.

Dear Homer,

Just a note to tell you about the '47 Reunion that you missed. It was great!

In the lower reaches of Connecticut — in the suburbs of Boston "47 with Squaw" signs pointed the direction to Hanover. The largest 10th Reunion group in Dartmouth history — just over 300 in all, made the trek and enjoyed every moment.

Publicity drumbeaters headed by John laniri predicted fair skies and their predictions were accurate. A warm sun made the liquid refreshment so palatable that if Sten Olsen had been charging for the stuff he could hie himself to Las Vegas and live off the profits for the summer.

The Reunion Committee outdid themselves. Every minute was well filled. Promptly at 5:00 P.M., Friday when all those unlucky enough to miss the Reunion were catching commuter's trains, our tent was christened and '47 vests provided by Bob Kirsch became the uniform of the day. Hardly was the tent a howling infant, than it was time for a wonderful buffet supper on the Inn lawn - all you could eat served by the most charming little college girls. (Did we ever go with girls that young?) Ed Brophy had to be restrained from thirds bv wife, Veronica.

The President's reception followed. We were greeted with great geniality by Pres. Dickey who had a good word for everyone and made us feel welcome and glad to be there.

The Alumni Dance with the sweetest music this side of 1932 (and very ably sponsored by the class of the same year) called for several whirls around the floor, and then back to the serious proposition of tent festivities.

Movies of the 1947 Graduation and the '47 beer bust were shown. No one changed much, although Jeff Mills was greyer. Very little extra poundage difference between '47 and '57 was evident - a tribute to No Cal and clean living.

Fine and valuable prizes were offered in the raffle which had nearly as many winners as prizes - Remington Shavers, Carter's underwear, Benrus watches, boned chickens and turkeys were just a few of the treasures raffled. The prizes were donated by Joe Kurey, Bernie O'Shea, Al Bildner, Alan Goldstein, Norm Fink, Jiggs Fuller, Bob Snedaker, Arnie Weber, Pat McLoughlin, Bob Moorehead, Fred Frassinelli, Dick Leary, Mel Nelson, Ed Senghas, Dave Stahl, and Ed Mann. One of the four bachelors present got a year's subscription to Ladies' Home Journal - but I gave it to my date. And so on into the night.

Saturday broke with a bang — or was it a low thud - a bang would have caused much holding of heads. After juice, doughnuts and coffee in the tent, the class picture was taken. Outside of one difficulty - Frank Weber collecting money for picture orders at the same time as Mr. Pierce, the photographer, everything went smoothly. Last seen, Frank was depositing his loot in a registered letter for home. We forgive you, Mr. Weber, you worked for it!

Next, the class meeting conducted by Jess Chadwell, every inch the Chairman of the Board. The class constitution was quickly approved, Pres. Dickey spoke to us, and the Executive Committee was announced. The new committee — Al Bildner, Pres.; Jess Chadwell, Sec. Chairman; Joe Kurey, Treas.; Bob Snedaker, Class Agent; and members, Jack Young, Ed Scully, Bob Harvey, Tom Leggat, Norm Falkin, Fritz Alexander, Ralph Warburton and George Ferrarese. Hugh Chapin will edit the Newsletter.

This was the only business of the weekend and while it was being conducted, the wives were spending fast of Papa's earnings in town - small wonder the Constitution was so quickly approved.

A fine lunch of fried chicken at the gym and we were off to Lake Fairlee equipped with detailed maps for the circuitous drive to the Club. Nearly everyone made it - many, many in Bob Kirsch's station wagon, and after a short pause for refreshments and a clothes change at the Club, we descended the "small incline" (talk about your Himalayas) to the water. Again the guys on the committee were ahead of us - this time with a keg of Tanzi's which had miraculously survived the trip down. The beer, the afternoon sun, the cool lake, the spacious lawn, the dock (before Al Bildner collapsed it with his backwash) were all too much for Clare Barton who had forgotten her bathing suit and went in, toreador pants and all. Good girl!

Many a '47 shook his head and wondered how he ever got to Dartmouth in the first place listening to Dean of Admissions Ed Chamberlain's after-dinner address on the kind of men Dartmouth wants. Al Zeller's three-year-old toddled up to endorse Dean Chamberlain's remarks every so often and is sure to be admitted, come 1970.

Back on the campus, the Dartmouth Players had an extremely well fed and appreciative audience for their specially written melodrama. Tent activities followed - music by the Five Little Indians and special awards for these distinguished '47s. Heaviest since Graduation: Herb Wik and Al Bildner. Lost Most Weight: John Bill. Lost Most Hair: Tom Gustenhoven. Most Kids: Bob Harvey (where were you, Fran O'Brien?). Married longest: Ray and Peg Lawrence (2 PM EST) and Len and Mildred Grimes (2 PM CST) both Oct. 22, 1944, take your pick! '47 with a picture of his mother-in-law in his wallet: no takers. '47 who lives furthest from Hanover: Vin Burke; Los Angeles — Jim Kelley, Venezuela. '47s who are still bachelors: too elusive to mention. Two prizes being held: to the couple who have a baby closest to Reunion date and the couple who have one closest to March 25, 1958.

On thru the night. Joe Jordan, Herb Wik, Al Bildner, Al Goldstein, Ed Scully, Jiggs Fuller, Perry Anderson, and Ed Murray closed the tent with Sunday morning coffee and doughnuts.

Memorial Services Sunday for the deceased of the class were conducted by John Schaeffer.

Farewell toasts of Milk Punch and Bloody Marys at the tent with Russ and Flo Pfaff and Bob and Mary Mortimer, and many others and then goodbye.

A resounding hand to the Committee CoChairmen; Al Bildner and Jiggs Fuller. Program Chairman; Bernie O'Shea, a veritable George Jessel; Al Hall, Class Directory;George Dolphin, Hanover liaison; Joe Kurey, who collected the dough; John laniri, publicity; Joan Bildner and Deanne Fuller,Squaw Co-Chairwomen; and the Regional reunionchairmen all over the country. WellDone!

You should have been there Homer —wemissed you!Sandy, for the Class of '47
