SHAKESPEARE was describing Cleopatra when he wrote the famous lines, "Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety." But they can be quoted aptly to convey the feeling one always has as Dartmouth begins a new college year, repetitious and much like every other college year, yet fresh, different, and intriguing in the unpredictable that lies ahead.
The new year, first in the decade that leads up to Dartmouth's 200 th anniversary, began with a rush.' Hardly had the football squad arrived to shake Hanover out of its summer lull when the vanguard of the Class of 1963, largest entering class in Dartmouth's history, was in town for the annual Outing Club trip preceding Freshman Week. From that point on, the student population built up rapidly. The remainder of the 840 freshmen arrived for the first '63 meeting on September 17, and hundreds of sophomores trooped in a few days later for the new fraternity rushing period prior to the start of classes. By the morning of September 24, when Convocation formally launched the College's 191 st year, Flanover was chock full of undergraduates - well over 2900, comprising the largest student body Dartmouth has ever had.
