DARTMOUTH'S 1959-60 intercollegiate athletic year gets underway later this month and the big question is "where do we go from here?" Last year the Big Green teams won Ivy League Championships in football, basketball and hockey, and took third place in the NCAA skiing championships, while there were many other team and individual accomplishments, too numerous to summarize here, which made the 1958-59 athletic year one of the brightest in the College's history.
Another year is starting, however, and at this mid-September writing there is a general feeling on campus that the prospects for another banner year on the sports front are as brilliant and zestful as the bright, sharp weather which has replaced the humidity of August.
The Big Green football team has been back at work since September 1 and to date looks most promising. The soccer and cross-country squads started their preseason practice sessions on September 14, while the freshman fall teams will organize later this month. Dartmouth's topnotch coaching staff, in all sports, is back intact from last year. The only major news in the D.C.A.C. over the summer was the resignation of Irving F. "Snuffy" Smith '41 as Associate Director of Athletics and Business Manager for the D.C.A.C. and the appointment of his replacement as Business Manager, Seaver Peters '54 (see story elsewhere in this section).
The major interest this fall centers, understandably, on Dartmouth's varsity football team and its defense of the highly coveted Ivy League Championship won last fall by the 1958 team. How does the team shape up and what are its chances this fall?
