CELEBRITIES AT OUR HEARTHSIDE.
June 1960 HERBERT F. WEST '22

Loring Holmes Dodd 'oo. Boston: Dresser,Chapman if Grimes, 1959. 402 pp. $5.00.

During Dr. Dodd's years at Clark University, it was his privilege to entertain various visiting celebrities. These included Amy Lowell, Vachel Lindsay, Robert Frost, Edna Millay, Carl Sandburg, many actors and actresses, many musicians, poets, and artists. The list is much too long to quote.

With a warm personality and a keen interest in all the arts, he was able to note the significant qualities of many of these celebrities, which he wrote up for the WorcesterSunday Telegram. Anyone interested in side glances, necessarily somewhat superficial, will be amused and entertained by this book. It should have been more carefully edited, however; for instance, in the chapter on Frost there is some misinformation about the late J. J. Lankes. Several years before he died, Mr. Lankes lived in Durham, N. C., and not in Hilton Village, Va. The book also reveals, consciously or not, that Dr. Dodd as a teacher has had a most pleasant and rich life.
