ELLWOOD H. FISHER '21 of Cleveland was elected president of the Dartmouth Alumni Council for 1961-62 at the 102nd meeting of the Council held in Hanover, June 14-16. Mr. Fisher, who is chairman of the board of Fisher Foods, Inc., a chain of eighty food stores in the Cleveland area, succeeds Charles F. McGoughran '20 of New York City as president of the Council.

Charles W. Bartlett '27 of Boston was elected an alumni member of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council for three years, succeeding F. William Andres '29. To serve as the Council's representative on the Board of Overseers of the Hanover Inn, Donald F. D'Arcy '33 of Dover, N. H., was reelected for the year 1961-62.
To serve three-year terms as members-at-large the Council elected John Turkevich '28, Eugene Higgins Professor of Chemistry at Princeton University; H. Reginald Bankart '35, New York, senior vice-president of Compton Advertising, Inc.; Robert T. Keeler '36, Cincinnati, partner in the law firm of Taft, Stettinius and Hollister; David S. Smith '39, New York, director of Columbia University's International Fellows Program and former Assistant Secretary of the Air Force; and George F. Jewett Jr. '50, Lewiston, Idaho, assistant secretary and treasurer of Potlatch Forests, Inc., lumber firm.
Mr. Fisher, the Council's new president, is prominent in the civic and cultural life of Cleveland as well as in its business affairs. He recently received the United Appeal's distinguished service award for these varied activities. He is chairman of the board of trustees of Fenn College in Cleveland. A member of the Alumni Council since 1958, he has been chairman of its bequest and estate planning committee. Among other services to Dartmouth, he was on the first Dartmouth Development Council and the first Capital Gifts Campaign Committee.
The three days of Council meetings occurred during the Reunion Week. At the opening dinner in Thayer Hall on Wednesday, June 14, the Council honored five Dartmouth men with its annual Alumni Award (reported elsewhere in this issue) and heard an address by Prof. John G. Kemeny on "The Revolution in Mathematics." After a full morning of committee meetings on Thursday, the Council held an afternoon session devoted to admissions, enrollment, development, and a Hopkins Center progress report. Speakers were John R. Willetts '40 chairman of the Council's Committee on Enrollment and Admissions; Edward T. Chamberlain '36, director, and Seward Weber '49, assistant director of the Admissions Office; George H. Colton '35, director of development; and Warner Bentley, director of the Hopkins Center.
At the conclusion of the meeting Council members attended the Hopkins Center cornerstone laying ceremony. Dr. Ralph W. Hunter '31, chairman of the Trustee Committee on Buildings and Grounds, presided at the brief program. On the speakers' platform with him were President Emeritus Ernest Martin Hopkins each received a silver-platted trowel A. Volpe of Massachusetts, chairman of the board of the Volpe Construction Company; Wallace K. Harrison, the architect; Charles F. McGoughran '20, Alumni Council president; and John P. Amsden '20, chairman of the Advisory Committee on Plant Development.
After they had spoken briefly, President Dickey and President Emeritus Hopkins each received a silver-plated trowel from Governor Volpe. They spread the first mortar for the cornerstone, which was strikingly different because Mr. Harrison had designed it in the shape of a pine tree.
The audience, in groups of twenty, was then conducted on a tour of Hopkins Center by student guides. Signs throughout the unfinished edifice indicated where the various art units will be located, and faculty members and others were stationed at the major points to describe the facilities and the plans for their use. The Center is scheduled to be ready by the fall of 1962.
Thursday evening the Alumni Council members and their wives attended a barbecue at The Keenes in Hanover Center. A final business session on Friday morning was devoted to committee reports, an informal talk by President Dickey on the state of the College, and the election of Council officers for the coming year.
