LEROY G. PORTER '15, Assistant Bursar of the College, ended a 44-year career as a Dartmouth financial officer when he retired on June 30. He first joined the staff as Assistant to the Treasurer in 1917, became Cashier two years later, and was appointed Assistant Bursar in 1928.
Mr. Porter for many years was in charge of the rental and assignment of dormitory rooms, which brought him into touch with the greater part of every student generation. The success he had in handling this complicated responsibility was referred to last month in a tribute from Max A. Norton '19, Associate Treasurer of the College:
"It was my privilege and pleasure to have been closely associated with Roy Porter during my thirty years as Bursar. During this period he demonstrated a rare devotion to his duties, using in his student and parent relationships a philosophy that will be difficult for any successor to match. While firm in administering student regulations, he was understanding and could make a student feel almost good in the face of being denied an exception to the rules. An important aid to him was his quiet humor, which often took care of a difficult situation. This held true with the student who couldn't pay his bill on time or who had made an unhappy choice in a roommate, as well as in many other situations.
"Alumni by the hundreds, possibly thousands, will recall some helpful assist from Roy Porter. At the time of his retirement I am sure they will want to join today's undergraduates in extending to him their appreciation and sincere good wishes. As he relinquishes duties faithfully performed for "so many years, I would like to paraphrase one of the late Bill McCarter's favorites: 'Doubtless God could have made a better Assistant Bursar but doubtless God never did.' "
Mr. Porter is a native of Canton,. Mass. Before joining the College staff he was associated, in Boston, with Employers Liability and Assurance Corp., Tileston and Hollingsworth Paper Co., and United Drug Co. Until this past year Mr. and Mrs. Porter and their son Courtney operated the Porter Florist Shop in Hanover. The Porters also have three daughters, Janice, Doris and Patricia.
