THE COLLEGE
NOVEMBER 1962

THE unofficial surmise that enrollment this year would be the highest in Dartmouth's history became official last month when Registrar Robin Robinson '24 released the figures for the fall term. The undergraduate total of 3060, the full-time (undergraduate and graduate) total of 3268, and the grand total of 3404 full-time and part-time students are all considerably higher than the comparable figures for previous years. At present 57 of the undergraduates are engaged in foreign study programs and are not on campus.

The record undergraduate enrollment is the result primarily of unusually large senior and freshman classes. The Class of 1963 entered Dartmouth three years ago with 842 men and still has 702 in college. The Class of 1966, with 814 men, is the College's second largest entering class. The Class of 1965, .numbering 805 at matriculation, has 756 men back this fall, and the Class of 1964, which entered 799 strong, has 691 registered. The remainder of the undergraduate total comes from 82 men in the Classes of 1953 through 1961 and fifteen unclassified or special students. Dartmouth's graduate enrollment of 342 includes 207 full-time and 135 part-time students.

An undergraduate enrollment of 3000 or more has been gradually building up since 1955 when the figure was exactly 2800. About that time a subcommittee of the Trustees Planning Committee recommended a planned increase of undergraduates to 3000 in the early 1960's. Going beyond 3000 was viewed as undesirable, but the committee did add that a satisfactory experience with a college of 3000 might change this recommendation."

Registrar Robinson's geographical breakdown of the undergraduates enrolled this fall shows that all fifty states are represented, along with the District of Columbia, the Canal Zone, Puerto Rico, and 35 different foreign countries. The top dozen states in numbers of men enrolled are New York 585, Massachusetts 337, New Jersey 264, Connecticut 232, Pennsylvania 195, Illinois 152, Ohio 150, New Hampshire 122, California 108, Minnesota 73, Vermont 59, and Michigan 53.

The largest groups from outside the United States are Canada 9, Great Britain 8, Japan 6, Switzerland 5, and Nigeria 4.
