Several years ago we reported that Buck Ewing had at one time during his swashbuckling career been decorated by Chiang Kai-shek for extraordinary services to the Nationalist Chinese Government. Now we have a new hero - Gordie McCoun, long with Pan American-Grace Airways. Gordie received the Peruvian Government's Order of Merit for Distinguished Service, conferred upon him by President Manuel Prado. Our knowledgeable source doesn't say what distinguished service our distinguished classmate performed, but remembering some of his undergraduate gyrations we assume it was earth shaking.
Our class chairman, the elusive Bud Clifford, still works for the New York Telephone Co., in case any of you have had your letters returned lately. His problem has been three office moves in the last three months, and with the Bell System's characteristic disregard of our postal system, our letter carriers just plain haven't been told where he is. We solved that with a collect phone call (which he seems to relish) and can surreptitiously report his new unlisted address as Room 925, 156 William St., New York, N. Y. We mention this because we are looking for volunteers from all corners of the country and all stages of puberty to help organize and pull the loose ends together into a staunch 25th Reunion committee. So wire, write, and phone collect your ideas and willingness to serve. Any of you investment advisors who know of a sure-fire way of investing our class treasury with a guarantee of a $100,000.00 appreciation in the next year would find yourselves reasonably well received. So, let us rally!
Meanwhile, one of our stalwarts, JockoVincens, has gone upstream to Albany as trust officer of the National Commercial Bank & Trust Co. of 60 State St. He left the monolithic security of Metropolitan Life as an investment attorney. Prior to that he was assistant counsel of American Bankers Ass'n. and a former chairman of the committee on Banking Law, American Bar Ass'n. Our spies tell us he is living at Orchard Home Farm, Kinderhook, N.Y., which sounds suspiciously like the address of Martin Van Buren, but then Van moved to Washintgon, didn't he?
From the Sept. '62 issue of The Bar News we learn that the directors of Szabo Food Service, Inc., national food services and vending organization, have named Tom Vent, a Chicago ISBA member, their vice president and general counsel. Tom's home address is 2580 Forest Glen Trail, Deer field, Ill.
Dr. Richard Hadley of Rockridge Rd., Rye, N. Y., has been appointed chief of staff of the United Hospital in Port Chester for a three-year term.
Dusty Rohde has been elected president of the Dartmouth Club of New Canaan, Conn., at their annual meeting at the Country Club. We look at this as another great step forward in educating the Indian"and exporting rum from New Hampshire.
Many of you may have watched the Steel Hour on TV Oct. 3 and seen the John Hess original script of "The White Lie." Oh, what a tangled web he wove! But all in all a most delightful story from a brilliant writer. John lives in New Hope, Pa.
A friend of ours visited Dorothy andHenry Conkle's "The Carolina Mountain Shop" in Cashiers, N.C., last month and reported a happy and well-adjusted Hank. His craft shop is exceptionally attractive and they do a sizable mail order gift business in case you're searching for unusual Xmas gifts. Hank even offers a free gift to any classmate who visits the shop. We remember our only visit to Cashiers during our undergraduate days when we bought a gallon of white moonshine for two bucks. Would make quite a gift!
Since the Xmas season is on us we usually save hundreds of dollars by not sending each classmate a card, but instead get real chintzy and wish you all the Season's Best in these class notes. However, we take the sneaky approach that 450 of you can very easily send US a card, and on it in your most illegible writing, dash off a few cheerful words about Mary being a sophomore at Mt. Holyoke and Jeffrey in boot camp on Guadalcanal. This makes us happy and gives us something to write about and causes you very little strain or pain. So do it, dammit, and Joyeux Noel.
