While Jack Reeder and wife Ollie were catching their respective breaths between tows at Hidden Valley, central Michigan's most lugubrious ski spa, Ollie befriended Bill Bachman, the classmate who brought Madison Avenue to greater Detroit and kept it there. She reported happiness.
All of which brings up the temporal difficulties of this column. We're reading this about Valentine's Day and writing it the second day of January when most God fearing people are in their sacks. We did get a modicum of Christmas cards from classmates, however, and will report belatedly the felicitations encountered therein:
The Haskell Davenports sent a madonna and child from north suburban Chicago with no note. Three wise men came from Betty and Jack Cumming via Rhode Island. Patty and Rodger Harrison were more voluminous; quote: "Because I enjoy your class notes so much, I guess the least I can do is add a few words to this Xmas greeting. Left Englewood, N. J., to CharlieNeer last July for the sunshine and salt spray of Long Island. At about the same time, also changed jobs; am now at Compton, Inc., finest of all Mad Ad agencies. At a recent Christmas housewarming managed to scare up Ellie and Jim Sampson, Trudyand Hugh MacLaren, Jack Kuhlke, Dot andWalt Darby, Glenn and Jack Vincens. See you at the 25th etc. etc."
Martie and Junie Merriam sent confused pictures of impressionistic Xmas lore along with earth resounding implications that they may be the class of '39's last formally registered procreators with the possible exception of Tommy Manville who will probably have an "h" behind his name if he makes it. Junie already has more than that.
Louise and John Egbert and Ellie and John Davenport sent cards with dogs on them indicating unquestionably their respective interests in things canine. (Though last month, while in Cleveland, we were unable to reach the Davenports because they were out in the country feeding their horses.)
Cordelia and Russ Fette also tend to the three wise men theme, and from their home at 84 Lake Forest, St. Louis, Mo., indicate that they have an unopened bottle of Welder's Original Proof just waiting for a corking excuse.
Sue (whose maiden name was Washburn) and Paul Wiiiship have moved again. This time to Washburn Rd. (of all things), Simsbury, Conn. They were forced by progeny to build a garrison colonial house, described by Sue as more upstairs room than down, and though seemingly topheavy, it has withstood an almost hurricane and several snow storms. No news of Windy or other activities.
Then there was a picture of a fat Jocko Vincens dressed as Friar Tuck carrying a hollywreath being pushed in a sitting position across the ice by a skinny version of Glenn. All very unlikely, but part of the Christmas potpourri.
Betty and Hank Bagg indicated they are still dispensing the old amber fluid, which is Holyoke vernacular for Hank's distributorship of Ballantine's beer and ale. Their oldest daughter Marnie is at House in the Pines this year, and they hope son Jon will enter Vermont Academy in the fall. They attended the Columbia-Dartmouth game and noted much new building on the campus (which should hearten contributors to the capital gifts campaign) and hope to see us in Harbor Island sometime. (Which could be late February.)
Polly and Bob Cushman sent a picture of a huge illogical looking bird. Janie and BillKent intimate that sufficient time has elapsed since our last visit that a new one might not be received too unkindly (a masterpiece in the double negative); and lastly, Jean and Bob Field, who have a freshman son at Hanover this year, whimsically invite us to the Cape to show us the summer White House. (Turncoat!)
Last week we attended a local Dartmouth Alumni Ass'n meeting aimed at interesting potential candidates of the class of '65 in going to Hanover. Highlight of the program was a composite "behind the scenes" talk by Ken DeHaven, Dartmouth's football captain this past year, and Jack Kinderdine, ivy league record breaking quarterback - both boys from this area. Very revealing. We were destined to be sub cellar, received early breaks and started sniffing roses, which later wilted.
