$128,947 Over Fund Goal
OCTOBER 1963

DARTMOUTH'S 49th Alumni Fund Campaign proved to be the most successful in the College's history with $1,378,947 contributed by 20,972 donors. This dollar total exceeded the 1963 Campaign goal by $128,947 and surpassed last year's record total by $163,000.

The donor total was 420 less than in the 1962 Campaign, but in that year some 1,400 alumni were granted Fund participation credit because of payments made to the Capital Gifts Campaign while in 1963 no such credits were granted. Therefore, the current figures represent a gain of 1,000 actual donors over 1962.

Dartmouth's percent of alumni participation for 1963 was 67.2%, a slight drop from 69% achieved in 1962, but still one of the highest achieved by any college or university in the nation.

A majority of Dartmouth classes set new class records in one or more categories. Forty-two classes raised record dollar amounts with 46 classes achieving or exceeding their assigned dollar goals. Twenty-two classes chalked up new participation marks and five recorded new donor totals.

"The Great Class of 1925" led by Agent Laurence G. Leavitt won back the Davis Trophy by setting an all-time Fund record in total dollars with $57,582. As part of its 25th Year Class Gift program, the Class of 1938 raised $53,863 for the Alumni Fund, while four other classes — 1923, 1926, 1927 and 1929 - exceeded $40,000. The Class of 1953 obtained 565 donors, largest total in the 1963 Campaign. The Class of 1954 was second with 523 while the classes of 1950 and 1957 each had 514.

The traditional Green Derby competition was close in most groups with these classes emerging victorious: Group I — 1904, Charles I. Lampee, Head Agent; Group II — 1915, Harold H. Lounsberry; Group III - 1925, Laurence G. Leavitt; Group IV — 1927, William C. Cusack; Group V — 1940, John B. Moore; Group VI — 1943, George B. Munroe; Group VII — 1953, Edward M. Condit Jr.; and Group VIII - 1956, Leonard J. Clark Jr.

Joining with alumni in support of the 1963 Campaign were 1,192 parents of Dartmouth undergraduates and recent graduates who contributed $45,900. Ralph E. Becker of Washington, D. C., headed a 143 member Parents Committee which raised this total.

Some 3,500 alumni served as Class Agents in the 1963 Campaign, largest group in Fund history.
