"Operation Recruit" has become the newest project of the Heart of America Dartmouth Club. The project is two-fold: (1) attracting highly-qualified Kansas City area prep and high school students to apply to Dartmouth and (2) convincing those accepted to attend the College.
The campaign began last May when the club hosted forty juniors from five high schools at an evening meeting. An impressive slide film of contemporary Dartmouth was shown, followed by a question and answer period. The club was fortunate to have Ad Winship '44, special assistant to President Dickey, to handle the queries. He answered questions about Colby and Skidmore as adroitly as those concerning tuition and curriculum.
This fall members of the club are canvassing all Kansas City area secondary schools for qualified seniors. The students will be invited to a general discussion about Dartmouth after a showing of the 1963 football highlight film.
The summer's social whirl at the farm of Pat Uhlmann '40 was a success once again. Larry Blades '57 and Lee Horschman '60 tied for the most valuable player award in Softball. Bev Blades and Toni Horschman were close behind their spouses in the balloting. Landon Rowland '59 was sent down to the minors. Creighton Hart '56, club president, used the power of his office to hold down permanent catcher, near the Budweiser cooler.
The noon luncheons, held every first Tuesday in the month at the University Club, were surprisingly well attended this summer. The highlight of the August luncheon was Bob Campbell '36, who related some of his bizarre experiences as a Social Security examiner.
