Mt. Washington Summit Sold
MAY 1964

In an April 21 exchange, Dartmouth formally turned over to the political summit of the State of New Hampshire, Governor John W. King, the geographical summit of the state - 51.8 acres of land on the top of Mt. Washington. Governor King presented to College Treasurer John F. Meek '33 a check for $150,000, the agreed-upon sale price.

The College acquired properties at the base and summit of the 6,288-foot peak, the highest in the northeast, from the estate of the late Colonel Henry Teague '00. Interest in state ownership of the summit property was first expressed in 1955 by then Governor Lane Dwinell '28. The College at that time stated, according to Treasurer Meek, that it was not urging the state to purchase the summit, but that if the state wished to do so, the College was prepared to discuss a sale. Negotiations opened in earnest last fall and approval of the Executive Council came on March 30.

The College is to retain a little over eight acres of the summit tract which it has leased to Mt. Washington TV, Inc., for television transmission until the year 2010. The state is to have first option to buy the land when the lease expires.
