Registration for the 1965-66 academic year is just four days away as this is written, and the welcoming party for 48 embryo physicians will already be history when you read this. On the following day Ralph Hunter M'32, now functioning as Acting Dean, is scheduled to address the neophytes representing some 15 colleges and universities, and then the first eight hours of classes will be under way. Can you still remember that first day!
We are anticipating with pleasure seeing a large number of you on October 16 for the next meeting of the Nathan Smith Medical Society. The scientific sessions, making the affair tax deductible, will be interspersed with enough social events to allow for reunions with your old classmates, and one of our outstanding members will receive wellearned honors. Forty-three College Street has now reached the pinnacle. Some of you will remember it as the President's house, others as the Graduate Club, or later as a fraternity house, or finally as Medical North Laboratory for Physiology. Beginning this fall, it has become a dormitory for female medical students!
The Administrative is very happy to report the return to the office of Madie Sowles, known to all recent vintage alumni, after a successful engagement with the cardiac surgeons. Once more, medical students and faculty will have their accustomed source of accurate information.
Incidental Intelligence - Former Governor of New Hampshire, Robert O. Blood M'13 recently was pictured in his capacity of Chairman of the Building Committee upon the occasion of the ground-breaking ceremony for a beautiful new YMCA build- ing in Concord. - You all should know that Jack Bowler M'l7 received the Alumni Award for Distinguished Service during Commencement activities. - We are happy to learn that Hastings Walker M'17 has recovered from his long illness and, though not resuming full practice in Honolulu, is now working on the early medical history of Hawaii. - Dow Mills M'28 reports that Jack Smith M'27 makes an excellent guide at the Naval Academy. - Jack Norris M'28 spent two profitable weeks in Hanover this summer attending the Alumni College. Swede Nelson M'32, while here for his reunion, recounted interesting tales of his African safari. - You now have a medical - representative on the Alumni Council in the person of Cal Fisher M'32.
Congratulations to Tom McElin M'42, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern, on his appointment as chairman of that department at the Evanston Hospital. - The Washington Star recently carried a feature story on the Machine-Shop Doctor, Bill Jamison M'42, who is working on devices applicable to openheart surgery. - A distinguished looking gentleman from Pittsburgh, who for some reason unknown to me was always referred to by Doctor Sy as "Hedgehog" FergusonM'42, brought in his two boys, one of whom was being interviewed by the college admissions. - The Harvard News Service announced the promotion of Hardy HendrenM'50 to Clinical Associate in Surgery.— Otto Schumacher M'50 left his endocrinology in Cleveland long enough to visit us briefly.
The Pittsburgh papers headlined a noteworthy event, the announcement of the engagement of Joe Dobos M'52 to Pat Settle. - Our deep sympathy goes out to JohnMonahan M'53 on the' death of his wife, Cathryn, on July 8.- Jim Wiggin M'56 has gone to work as a surgeon in Mansfield, Ohio. - And Pete Teal M'57, who visited us with Nan this summer, is now doing Orthopaedics in Minneapolis. - The LarrySeymour family M'57 returned to its Hanover home briefly after spending three years in Germany. - The Dick Ruels M'57 have swept into the lead in the Stork Derby with the arrival of the Lucky Seventh, Ellen Jo. - The Bill Gallaghers M'58 recently welcomed their third, Katherine Kelly. - Any information you need regarding fetal electrocardiography can now be obtained from Mike McKeown M'59.
