THE MABEL and Charles Murdough Experimental Greenhouse, a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas G. Murdough '26 in memory of his parents, was dedicated on January 30. Mr. and Mrs. Murdough and their son, Thomas Jr. (right above) are shown with President Dickey outside the greenhouse which is located on the top floor of the new five-story Charles Gilman Life Sciences Laboratory.
The greenhouse facilities, used by both the College's Department of Biological Sciences and the cytologists of the Medical School, provide an automatic vent system that opens air vents gradually if the temperature rises above the required level and closes them automatically if it falls below this, a central automatic heating system for both day and night, manual shades to cover the greenhouse roof, humidifiers and coolers to blow moist air over the plants, controls to regulate the temperature of water used for various plants, and nearby controlled environment chambers - located on the fourth floor —to simulate conditions in virtually any locale in order to raise plants in their natural state.
The new greenhouse itself runs along the southwest wall of the fifth floor of Gilman. This gives it a proximity to faculty offices and other research facilities of both the Biological Sciences Department and the various departments of the Medical School, which was not available before when the greenhouse was a separate facility.
Plants are grown in the greenhouse to serve both teaching and research. Nine courses use material supplied by this greenhouse and several research projects are directly dependent upon it. Associate Professor of Botany William T. Jackson says there are few greenhouses in the country with facilities comparable to Dartmouth's Murdough Greenhouse.
